For decades in Ireland there's been cases of drug dealers & criminals who will appropriate the Republican struggle to legitimise their drug dealing/criminality. So, they'll operate under a banner like 'Real IRA' and wrap themselves in the Irish flag to give their law breaking the veneer of respectability. That's what cases like Alana McLoughlin reminds me of. He's hiding behind a trans flag to beat up women.
"My prediction is that one day, figures like Nancy Kelly and Michael Cashman will have to change their names to escape the disgrace of what they condoned."
I completely agree. And their posterity will be so ashamed of them, they will do anything not to have the relationship revealed.
It's a real story in the latest Private Eye (the serious part, under "Books and Bookmen" ["Bookpersons, shurely" - ed] ); the source isn't named, but they're usually pretty good.
Pullman's "sin" doesn't seem to have been related to the trans issue though; he defended another author who'd been accused of "perpetuating racial stereotypes" (or tried to; turns out he was replying to someone who wasn't talking about that author). He also apologised; can't see whether that was warranted, as the post was deleted.
He did apologise and it was warranted. He’d compared three women of colour who’d pointed out some problematic descriptions of students in Clanchy’s book to the Taliban which then resulted in them facing a Twitter pile on. The press has reported examples such as “almond eyes” but she’d talked about nose sizes, skull shapes etc. There were also problems with the way she referred to working class or disabled students. Clanchy has obviously done a lot for students of all backgrounds in her lifetime and credit where credit is due. But even the best people can have blind spots.
Best value newsprint ever! I’ve been reading it since I was a kid and my dad used to buy it. Apart from the continuous exposes it is very funny, the cartoons are excellent and the Crossword has sniggeringly smutty clues.
If you are new to it look up Private Eye running jokes online to get some of the references, eg. “Brenda” and “Brian” are the Queen and Prince Charles.
Am deeply disappointed by the courts' decision in the Keira Bell case but they have little choice but defer to clinicians' expertise and they cannot stray beyond their remit. This is a matter of government oversight and political intervention but it will be a long haul battle as long as academia remains captured. Congrats to all who fought back, you got the conversation started.
Wesley Yang's latest substack is a good read for the kind of tactics that are used for institutional capture. These are very powerfula nd successful tactics and we have all been caught flatfooted.
That student, who called his lecturer “visibly queer” and made he/him cry with happiness, well what an absolute lickarse! I mean, that is really, really first class lickarsing! I bet that same student will name his first born child after his mother in law! And compliment his boss on his golf swing and LinkedIn posts! It’s impressive! I have to admit I’m impressed!
It exemplifies the ridiculously superficial, narcissistic lives all of these misguided people live. It's essentially a form of social masturbation. And also utterly vomit-inducing 🤣
I can’t be offended. It’s genius! That kid is getting a first in Greek literature! He’ll be running a bank in a few years. For some reason banks love hiring graduates of Greek & Roman stuff!
That did occur to me too. We only have his word that some woke student is ecstatic by a visible queer presence! It’s more likely that the student is a figment of his imagination, than such a capable & gifted lickarser!
I somehow failed to spot that! Probably because he thinks he has an 'edgy' sense of humour and is really cool. Maybe he's 'queering' margarine (which identifies as butter)?
I don't think men do anything to TW in toilets. When did we last hear of any beating or whatever in men's loos? And we would hear, for sure. Miranda Yardley and, I think, Fionne Orlander, have said they don't get any aggravation in the gents.
But if any of those Chinese people should refuse to say TWAW then Amnesty International Ireland would withdraw all representation on account of them being bigots.
Be very wary of Amnesty International and news about Xinjiang (I hope I spelled that correctly). This is a U.S. misinformation offensive; while you're at it, look up a worldwide map of U.S. military installations. Because of this, many Uighurs have lost their jobs in clothing factories. There ARE Islamic extremists planting bombs in Xinjiang and every government has the right to not allow that (and most of the time the U.S. is behind the extremists, funding and arming them).
Very depressing that education is employing such utter feckwits who have dire NPD.
I'm going back into my cave for a while, to pretend that none of this is really happening....because I have this urgent need to swear, at the top of my voice, and throw things at the wall, very hard....PFFFFFFFFFT!
The Pullman incident was regarding his comparison of three female authors of colour to the Taliban for pointing out problematic parts of Kate Clanchy’s book. Clanchy has devoted her life to teaching and is loved by former students. She has helped refugees, and improved lives. However passages of her book were highly questionable. The Times reported the use of “almond eyes” and “chocolate skin” in an article about cancel culture, but chose to omit Clanchy’s descriptions of nose sizes, skull shapes etc and her attitudes towards working class and disabled students. Her teaching record speaks for itself, but I’d be really hurt if I was one of those students who’d been so described. Pullman’s tweet led to a Twitter pile on by racists towards the three women who’d pointed it out.
It should be said that the student with 'almond-shaped eyes' ardently defended Clanchy in The Times, 15 August.
'Critics labelled this description patronising, insulting, offensive, colonialist and racist. This upset me. I am that girl with the almond eyes. I did not find it offensive.'
She'd proudly used the descriptor in her poetry for Clanchy's class, as
'almond-shaped eyes are at the core of my Hazara identity. Hazaras are an almost invisible ethnic group in Afghanistan. I am currently writing my master’s thesis on their genocide. For Hazaras, “almond eyes” is a beautiful reference, widely used in our poetry and to proudly describe ourselves.'
Toward the end, another former student who'd worked with Clanchy for almost ten years also strongly defends her.
Yes she did. And I don’t wish to take anything away from Clanchy’s outstanding teaching record. However I wonder if for example the Jewish girl would have felt the same way about the description of her nose. Clanchy also tried to contact the employer of someone who’d left negative reviews on goodreads.com (they’ve written about it there). I recommend reading what people have said of Clanchy’s actions towards them for leaving negative reviews on goodreads.com

Is the bit about Philip Pullman true? I never know what I can believe now.

Thanks. Adding PE to my shopping list for tomorrow.
I need to remember to do the same

Oh, what I would give for an edit function!

I bet there was no student, I would bet my life it’s bullshit made up in his need for a self affirming tweet! 😂😂 Me , myself and I.
That did occur to me too. We only have his word that some woke student is ecstatic by a visible queer presence! It’s more likely that the student is a figment of his imagination, than such a capable & gifted lickarser!
Absolutely!! “Visibly gay” my arse, you’re bog standard Jo Blogs mate. Sorry! 😂
Why has that dickhead got a flora margarine tub on his head?! 🤷♀️😂
I somehow failed to spot that! Probably because he thinks he has an 'edgy' sense of humour and is really cool. Maybe he's 'queering' margarine (which identifies as butter)?
It's one of the "lighter" things he does. Presumably to entertain his dogs 🤷♀️
Because he's oh so quirky
I think calling him dickhead kind of answers your question :-)
Hi!
Re The Hardwicks ; Worst Owen Jones /Ruth Hunt tribute band . Ever .
If you're not LGB, or post-op transsexual (with some exceptions), you're just a hetero with a fetish
* 'visibly queer tutor’...again people who are desperate for attention
* Asked this often what would men do to trans women in the toilets etc? I don't get any replies.
* MMA fighter 5ft 7ins ...not tall for a man no, but it is mass muscle distribution.

Has anyone else noticed that these people are almost always usually (being generous) not good-looking?
Which specific people are you referring to?
Is it Helena, or has Sprout Farts found another vulnerable woman to exploit? Even in a sea of horrible TRAs, he stands out as a particularly vile POS.

Only Connect absolutely killed me on Monday. Laugh or cry!? 🤣🤣 If I'd known he was a straight guy, I'd have really lost it!
Miriam Cates played a blinder. Well done! Nee-norr-nee-norr-nee-norr!
Susie Q's response to Laurie Penny is one of the best I've ever seen. I expect Susie's still waiting for an answer.
