Some years ago I was writing an article about female comedians and Janey Godley was one of women with whom I got in touch for an interview. She replied (I'm paraphrasing) "I'm not a feminist and don't want to be in your article" or words to that effect. (Note that the article was about FEMALE comics, I never used the feminist.) So I haven't been remotely surprised by her recent adherence to the gender cult and her determination to heave other women under a train.
Yes she's been dining out on that for long enough! She has been around on the comedy circuit for quite some time. I saw her live a few times back in the day but as she blocked me on Twitter after telling me to "Fuck off", I'm guessing she wouldn't want me in her audience now. (Not that I would be!)
She is a Glaswegian comedian, known for being quite controversial. I did find her funny, at times. She's rough, but there's no shame in that. She has lived quite a life, her mother was murdered, she was mixed in with some very heavy gangland types. I used to give her kudos for her upbringing, that she was still brave after quite the backstory.
But I gave up on her a long time ago when I saw her chanting the men are women mantra and absolutely refusing to engage with any woman who asked her a single question.
I didn't think I implied that a shit background makes a shit person? I liked her mainly because of her rough background, as I had one myself, very working class, very rough - though not in her category thankfully, hers was very dark.
I admired her because of her background. I found her roughness amusing and it pleased me that it offended so many.
But I stopped admiring her when she started crapping on women.
I always found Godley's humour to be rather basic (though sometimes clever) but it made me laugh in a sort of horrified "oh my God" way. I loved that she offended people, I like the beige brigade being offended, it amuses me.
I couldn't take more than half an hour of her every now and then, but sometimes she hit the nail on the head. Her story of her "wee mammy" in her raggedy clothes going to the school to protect her from the headmistress really touched me. My own mother would have used words, not her fists and was not feral - she was considered quite posh in the neighbourhood I grew up in (posh was saying please and thank you and using words of more than two syllables where I grew up) but my mum had that same defiance, that same lack of fear in the face of authority when it came to protecting her children. And I felt a great well of sympathy for her knowing her mother was murdered, tossed in the Clyde by a violent man.
I was actually very disturbed and quite upset by her anti women, internalised misogyny nonsense, and more or less tried to forget she existed.
I honestly thought she was brighter than this. What did she think would happen when the Eye of Sauron turned upon her? You cannot go around deliberately offending everyone for a laugh, then expect the most over sensitive, thin skinned permaffended Wokestapo not to notice that you, yourself, are offensive for a laugh and for a living.
Just to add - although I do not consider what I have seen of her tweets to be any of the isms or phobias (because they are, indeed, just jokes) she wasn't joking with her misogyny.
And I have never yet seen a misogynist who was not also a racist, and often also a homophobe. Misogyny is the most core, basic bigotry. To hate, fear or dehumanise half the human race can only mean that you have other bigotry within you. In my observation, nobody is safe around a misogynist, as it is a precursor to all the other prejudices.
Well, I mostly agree but I remember that 'rock against racism' spawned 'rock against sexism' because a fair amount of anti-racists still thought it was ok to treat women like crap
Thanks for sharing the Roy 'Chubby' Brown petition. His comedy isn't for me either but there are myriad 'comedians' I don't appreciate. So I don't go to their shows. It's not up to me or anyone else to decide who or what other adults watch. This seems to be a difficult concept to grasp for a worryingly increasing number of people nowadays.
Agree - I’ve signed the petition for the same reason. Hod act is quite crude and not for me but I don’t expect other adults to think the same way I do. Freedom of choice.
A lot of people saying this to me. It's not true. I believe in redemption. I don't believe anyone deserves to be "cancelled" if they understand what they got wrong and try to improve. Often, those people become the most effective advocates for progress and decency.
😂 Very good! I hope that this is giving the Scots Branch of Witchfinders'R'Us some pause for thought, about how many of them will end up in the public stocks!
Janey has fallen on her sword so many times in the last few days we could use her as a colander. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving person. Not before she got 12 grand for the advertising though. Wonder if she'll return it.
I read that yesterday. Apologising to "everyone I hurt" or "anyone who was hurt by my comments" (paraphrasing) is a backhanded apology. It's not apologising for what she said, and I don't think I've heard her say she didn't mean any of the comments, just that she didn't mean to hurt anyone with them. Maybe it's just me, but I find her wording pretty strange.
We have this as a big problem in the States, both socially and personally. Men and these types of women just don't get it that saying I'm sorry I hurt you is not an apology for their behavior or statements. It once again transfers the problem to the "hurt" person rather than being straightforward and saying I'm sorry for what I did.
I signed the petition. Because if you agree with free speech for some, you MUST agree with free speech for all. Humour is the last bastion of free speech. If they come for that too, we are absolutely done. I find Chubby Brown stomach turning, he is far, far worse than Godley ever was. And I signed.
Once you say "no free speech for him" it is a very short walk to no free speech for anyone.
Of course I would never go to see him. And fortunately, I don't have to.
“I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it” - this should be our motto. All of us.
Jane Godley is now on Scottish TV telling us all to behave well and be kind to stop Covid spreading even more. Had a friend round and she was raving about Janey Godley, how funny and kind she is until I showed her the tweets. Straight onto FB and out with the sharp sword. All round her 500+ FB friends about how much of a nasty besom Godley is. It has gone global and got back to the besom who says she will sue. As my friend says "Bring it on, Janey. We are up for it to go before the Sheriff."
I see Godley has protected her tweets. I missed the furore, but I am guessing she was called to task for some of her previous comments.
Interesting that she tells everyone else to fuck off if they feel offended, but is kowtowing to her TRA overlords.
She has been outspokenly misogynistic for years, so she won't be missed.
This is the problem with cancel culture, nobody can ever be woke enough, and the louder and more aggressive the Wokestapo become, the more they hunt around for anyone they can bully and harass.
You didn't give a damn about women being taunted and tortured by men. So I don't feel much sympathy for you now, dear.
I’ve just unfollowed her. She still has over 240k followers on Twitter. The racist tweets that have surfaced just go to show her ‘wokeness’ on Twitter is all an act.
She's only ever been woke for TRAs. I can't believe she thought they'd never notice. Honestly thought she was brighter than that. She should have aligned herself with people who defend free speech, which is definitely not the Wokestapo. Misogynists always think they'll be safe from the witchfinder general, until its too late.
I’m sorry David Baddiel didn’t defend you or offer any support. Actually I’m disappointed in so many high profile people who aren’t speaking up about this issue. A penis is not a vagina. And women’s spaces and rights must be protected from AGP males. However, Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown’s racial slurs have no place in any society I want to live in.
Years ago, I watched about 30 minutes of a Roy Chubby Brown video of his show (that's all I could stomach). He is quite repulsive (filthy and sexist) but he has a loyal audience of (older) men and women They go and see him for a laugh and it doesn't make them worse people for it.
I can't say I've noticed racism in the bits about him I've come across, unlike with Bernard Manning and Jim Davison and, quite frankly, I've sometimes been in a pub, late at night where, whenever 'Living Next Door to Alice' many of us have joined in a chorus of 'Alice, who the fuck is Alice'.
So, sorry, the man shouldn't be cancelled, otherwise, we turn into our enemies.
He clearly is racist. For what it’s worth Brown’s freedom of speech doesn’t trump theatre owners freedom to choose who they platform. https://youtu.be/AablUHEPV_s
Random post but I’ve just been told by a TRA that detransitioners don’t exist and I should pay more attention. We are trying to have rational arguments with complete morons. Don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
That's a new one! But it doesn't surprise me, detransitioners scare the hell out of them.
Owen Jones did a YouTube video where Freddy McConnell was saying something about ignoring detransitioners as they're only a 1% minority... I wonder what percentage of men give birth to kids?
If only we had gifs to reply on here. Mine would be lots of witches in full witch garb dancing/celebrating around a cauldron and laughing. This is what I'm doing in my head right now....

We could block book & then walk out.
Kind of a lot of effort to go to though.
Nah. That’s the type of thing they do
People block booked Trump rallies then never showed up.
Katie Hopkins ones, too. But those were free & not an entertainer trying to make a living.
Take some rotten food stiffs to chuck.
Horse manure then.

Definitely, no worries :)

You make a very good point. I'll be mulling that one over tomorrow. (Bed time now :-/ )

Is that why your party passed a law to criminalise the kind of comments Janey Godley made?
😂 Very good! I hope that this is giving the Scots Branch of Witchfinders'R'Us some pause for thought, about how many of them will end up in the public stocks!
That's it isn't it? Remember Damien Barr and his twitter history? Wonder if Patrick Harvie has previous?
Janey has fallen on her sword so many times in the last few days we could use her as a colander. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving person. Not before she got 12 grand for the advertising though. Wonder if she'll return it.
The BBC article linked said that she is donating it to charity.
"She has apologised "without reservation" to "everyone I hurt" and offered to donate the fee for the advert to the STV Children's Appeal."

He is indeed repellent but doesn't seem to be a bully the way Godley is.

Also in Scotland, I just read that the Scottish Government is looking to criminalise protest outside the Scottish Parliament. https://grumpyscottishman.wordpress.com/2021/09/09/she-absolutely-has-to-go-this-has-gone-far-enough/
Godley's covid ads have been pulled now because of her tweets.
U is mong da angels now. Still laughing at that.

I agree, I would laugh at their hypocrisy but cry at the fact that detransitioners are the true victims here

"I hear you're a racist now, Janey!"
"I might be able to devote myself full time to the old racism."
