Really ? Will they never learn? Just been reading the story about Jennifer in the Times. The report was factual ,with no opinion expressed. However, the comments by the public ( too many to get through them all ) were brilliant ,with each and every single one expressing shock and horror at the Gwent police:s actions. The public are definitely waking up now and it's been on GB News as well. Well done to Jenni and I hope she's ok after that ordeal. The public are behind her , that's for sure ,and if it wasn't for you Graham , JL ,moley and others ,none of us would even get to know about any of it so well done to you all 👍👍👍x

The bit on the front page stands out - mentioning the academic book being removed

Expand full comment

If you look on her twitter there's a picture of the search warrant, which mentions 'transphobic material'. That means the book, by Dr Heather Brunskell-Evans, must be considered transphobic.

EDIT: The book was "Transgender Children and Young People" by Jennifer Swayne

EDIT 2: Jennifer is the name of the activist not the author! I'm having a brain-fart day :-(

Like the social work organisation labelling Glinner as this, then when challenged quietly removing their libellous statements? I wonder which books are on Gwent Police's acceptable thinking list. Does The National Library of Wales support this censorship?

I thought you were about to say I wonder which books they have at Newport Police Station - i’d dread to think

Expand full comment

I'd like to see Bookcase Credibility on Twitter attempt that one.

Plods unaware it was academic book. Jennifer was asked by them if she could read or write apparently. You couldn’t make this up

Expand full comment

I was wondering why would they have asked that and what relevance it has. Explanations so far seem to be mumble mumble risk assessment mumble mumble safety mumble. It's appears they might have assumed because of disability (obvious or hidden) that this also meant she had intellectual impairment. Nice assumptions huh? I do hope that wasn't the case. That would be discriminatory wouldn't it?

Maybe they think books are some performance art installation. Who knows anymore.

Expand full comment

They claimed they ask everyone. Although I’m guessing they do arrest plenty of people who can’t read or write - the way it is asked including tone of voice used would come into it. Jenni seems to have put them straight. She told them she has a masters degree

Exactly and seeing how many people in prison can't read or write this is where more of our time, energies and focus should be going. Maybe not arresting teachers (or retired teachers) would be a start. It struck me as the rise of an attitude that would find those who could read or risk speaking up and out very challenging.

For me it added to the whole bizarre picture of events, and how some things that are obvious or indisputable become confused and so everything has to be checked and doubled checked. Much of what happened gives the air that she was being treated disproportionately and with some strange agenda. So many elements added further unbelievable cack-handed detail. It occurred that if they were trying to establish motives with disputed 'communications' then literacy and therefore full knowledge of what you had been accused of doing might be involved. I'm clearly scraping the barrel here. Who knows what the police were thinking.

I listened to an interview of hers in full and am in awe of how calm and reasonable she sounds. How assured. All power to her elbow :-). That the police seem to be letting TRAs and other 'stickerers' have free rein with far more offensive and malicious requests to 'TERFS' adds to my incomprehension. Maybe the ones with images of guns on and the men mentioning gun ownership - helpfully again all openly on social media.

Stonewall trying to embed their version of the law. We should challenge every single organisation that uses this sleight of hand to muddy the protected characteristics.

Expand full comment

Above all they've conveniently omitted the protected characteristic "belief", as in gender critical belief.

Expand full comment

Does that come under the bit that includes other beliefs (like veganism) ? Gender identity should be deleted or at least moved away from characteristics like sex and sexual orientation - and if they are so attached to GI I think they should mention vegans too. I prefer vegans to gender ideologues any day of the week.

Can someone explain to me how our publicly paid Police who answer to the Govt are allowed to misquote/mislead the actual law? is the capture of our public bodies so absolutely complete? and why arent the Chief Constable's in front of the Minister for Policing begging to keep their jobs?

Back to the cops doing the work they have been ordered to do by the state. Maybe this is clearer in the U.S. but I haven't believed in the good intentions of the police since I was perhaps two months old!

Expand full comment

I'm not completely naive, but our 'state' is a bit of a mess at the moment. I admit I struggle to get my head around how blatant and effective this ideological capture has been. There are many famous incidents and miscarriages of justice that are held deep in our collective UK cultural memories and for particular communities they are manifold and passed through generations. They used to have a veneer of public good and on balance it was accepted. Then they were ordered to improve. But something seems to have changed, when there are so many repeated instances of their abuse of power and in so many areas. Then their excuses or forced apologies are ridiculously poor and they seem filled with ignorance and incompetence. Then it happens again and they investigate themselves and promise change again. There have been a few (becoming many) ex and senior Police officers speaking up and out with their stark and very well-informed criticisms. Institutionally racist and misogynist.

Apparently Gwent Police claim on Twitter they are #ProtectingandReassuring. Maybe #ConfusingAndAlarming or #ContinuingToDestroyTrustAndConfidenceInPolicing might be more accurate.

I hope they don't find out that there are big places with lots of books in. Literally shelves full. The ones that haven't been closed that is. Do they want to check my reading material and my thinking in my own home? It's a struggle for me to realise that no one in their offices or remote workplaces realised this isn't a good look and nipped it in the bud. Yet still they continue. Do they really think they'd be able to target a vulnerable woman and apparently at the behest of a mentally disturbed young man/men who is/are openly harassing and threatening others on social media, and no one would notice or comment? It's an odd hill to die on. I don't consent to that.

For some reason I couldn't like your comment, so I'll write and say I do!

At least you have some police speaking up. Frank Serpico tried to speak up about the NYC police and the cops attempted to murder him.

I think they are willing to do whatever they are told to do. If they thought this would land them in trouble with higher authorities they never would have done it. Cities here in the U.S. just make big payouts to people who are harmed by the police part of doing business, and of course the taxpayers are footing the bill.

:-) the differences in US and UK are fascinating. I am cautious about tarring all police officers for a few reasons but I completely agree about higher authorities - fish rots from the head down and all.

I know how it is to view myself as part of a group or profession and to integrate that into how I view myself. It's very hard to speak up and whistleblow against colleagues and how at first glance something may not seem that bad in isolation, but as a pattern is very different. Then that becomes ingrained and part of the woodwork and you might be encouraged to ignore it or sanctioned or demoted for speaking up. You might also want to change the system from within. Look up some of the names in this piece https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-58754182 like former Metropolitan Chief Superintendent Parm Sandhu and Zoe Billingham who was a senior inspector at Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC). Or the Macpherson Inquiry after the murder of Stephen Lawrence. Some have linked the non-hate or non-crime wrongthink mess we have now to the desire to tackle (institutional) racism and attitudes earlier as 'intelligence' that may then lead to crimes.

And this is why I say it's not the bad cops who are responsible for these misdeeds, it's the decent ones who say nothing. I know it is very difficult to be part of an institution -- why I never wanted to be part of an institution -- and step outside the boundaries, but those are the people society needs to speak up. This is why I admire people who blow the whistle so much!

If they don't understand the Equality Act, how can they police it?

It just shows how much they don't understand and they are supposed to uphold the law!! They just pay lip service to oiks like Stonewall, Mermaids etc and think they are on the 'right' side and safe. Look behind you Gwent police, there is a tsunami on your tail...and fair few dinosaurs🦖🦕

Didn’t I hear a while ago, how shocking it was that police numbers are down, nationwide ?

Yet, arrests, and interrogation of a woman, warrants quickly authorised for searching the home, over stickers and posters ?

The clear up rate for Gwent must be admirable, and I’m sure each officer will be awarded commendations, for a crime free county.

Well done 👏 👏👏👏👏

I was in a meeting not long ago where a young trans male who was training to be a cop was present. When this young (woman, actually) began joshing about putting people in handcuffs / Grindr / bdsm and finding it really funny, I left the room. We are in the hands of people like this, who will be installing trans ideology in the Police & will be strengthening the arm of juvenile trans Police within the Police.

Gwent is one example where their influence and the danger of it is showing up in practice.

I can’t believe they put forward the possibility that books on Jenni’s shelves ‘transphobic’.

The Thought Police mechanism kicks into action... What a case.

Here’s the missing ‘are’.

So Gwent police were made aware there was an issue. Changes were made. Inaccurate changes, continuing the confusing errors, but still they made an attempt.

It takes a few seconds to search online (or in paper copy if you need) to find what the Equality Act protected characteristics are. Or ask a colleague who might be better informed. That the person (people? committee? task group?) who was tasked to correct their website was unable to complete this task leaves me wondering why. It's a cut and paste job. How did that happen? Are they so Stonewalled that they are still actively and deliberately obstructing knowing what the law is accurately? Following what procedures? On what basis? Were they advised again or pressured? Was someone more senior telling them what to correct it to? Do the College of Policing still produce conflicting guidance so it's pot luck? It's beyond sloppy. Why are they relying on members of the public to point this out to them? Is this a Gwent policy? They seem dedicated in how they are mucking this up.

What's the point of their website? Why randomly generate unreliable content online if it serves no purpose? Is it to inform the public? Help us? Reassure us? Be a reliable first point of contact? They are continuing to communicate that they don't appear to know what they are doing.

Expand full comment

The Police aren’t lawyers. Most haven’t got a clue about how to apply a law correctly.

Expand full comment

I know, but this is basic police behaviour. If they don't know what they are doing, then they shouldn't plaster their website or their 'platforms' with guesses at what the legal basis is for anything. We need to trust they know what they're doing. It requires no legal training or any degree to realise many things and you'd think and hope that when in doubt they would be cautious and note at every point how they were coming to the conclusions they were. There needs to be an audit trail. It comes across as back-covering and entirely out of proportion to any alleged 'offense' committed. Mumble mumble vaguely ill-defined 'hate' non-crime non-what-come again? I used to ask what 'bill stickers will be prosecuted' meant when I was a kid as it was a bit of a joke that it was seen as such a grave offence (hence bill stickers is innocent). Poor Mr Bill Stickers getting prosecuted :-(.

This is against recent Covid regulations being/not being applied and were sometimes a bit randomly applied with/without discretion and then retrospectively withdrawn or changed. Then the comments from within the police on how they were unsure how to deliver and asking for clearer guidance and not having multiple pages dropped to be enforced within the next 24 hours.

So I am surprised they are continuing to apply this in such an inconsistent manner. Vulnerable people were falling foul of some very strange decisions. Women are being stabbed, stalked and dying, yet this is where police priorities are. We hear that loud and clear. Despite all their communications and attempts to convince the 'public' that they are 'listening'.

Expand full comment

Point aside...

I still don't get why all these groups are needed … if the law says don't kill, rape, assault, rob, steal etc etc (with circumstances eg manslaughter, self defence taken into consideration!) … it should apply equally to all.

Please keep complaining until Gwent Police get the list of 9 protected characteristics right. Just 9. Copied from the Act which is available on line. It really isn't difficult?!

Expand full comment

These captured forces are so relentless with holding up the Stonewall façade, doing their best to replace sex as a protected characteristic with gender identity. Everyone knows that men with special identities are the safest demographic---Even safer than men who don't ID as trans.

That's why they call in all manner of ""transphobic"" slights--A concentrated effort to pump those stats up so they can still claim their Most Oppressed status when TDOR rolls around with zero murderous hate crimes (again)

It's laughably pathetic.
