I know several such families, including parents who are themselves lesbians whose daughter (now 'transman', breasts cut off) has become estranged from them because of the trans cult. Given the story initially appeared in The Global Times, a Chinese state controlled outlet, I approached with caution and tried to make clear that I was reporting what was being reported and not as absolute truth.
Yes, China has an appalling track record on LGBT rights and is extremely homophobic. All the more reason why I can fully believe it diving on gender identity ideology as a means to 'trans the gay away' in gender non-conforming children. As other homophobic regimes have done.
China is a country of contradictions. They produce the world's supply of sex toys and sex dolls yet pornography is illegal. They have the largest prostitution industry yet prostitution is illegal. I just don't see after living and teaching there 7 years how that could possibly happen students work 6 days a week. It's insanely competitive to grow up there. They may have found one or two and made examples of them. There is a Chinese word for ladyboy which are men who tend to go to Thailand to get surgeries for transition but there's no sex change passport anything like that. There are provinces where you are given Flyers menus of girls to purchase. While it's illegal, it's hard to get the police to do anything about it. Rather than gender clinics, this is a real issue within China, and it is something that they deny is happening.
1.4 billion people across 31 provinces leaves room for many contradictions. Despite how censorious the Chinese state is, they also send large numbers of students to study abroad. I just checked the last UK number (recorded 2019/20) and we alone had 140,000 Chinese with student visas in higher education. It's risen massively in the last decade.
Quite possible it's an unexpected gift from western universities.
