I’d also like to point you to this exceptional opening paragraph by Gareth Roberts, himself a victim of cancel culture. I don’t think I’ve ever heard it better explained.
“Most of us understand that ‘cancel culture’ is a polite way of talking about the intimidation and bullying of people with the ‘wrong’ opinions, by a small number of crazed online children and disturbed young adults. It is enabled by older people who have mistaken a certain section of the miseducated middle class for public opinion.”
Perfect.
Wow. How incredibly ungrateful and spineless. I'm so sorry, Graham. But I'd bet my house on Norton being amongst the toads who'll be queuing up to kiss your arse when all this is over. (And I feel inclined to mention that the only time he's ever made me laugh was in Father Ted.)
Notable that it's "men of a certain age" he talks about. The thousands of brilliant, articulate women are simply invisible to him. Norton tells himself that the "anti-trans" lobby is led by late middle-aged, right-wing men. As with the disappointingly dismissive "Rest is Politics" duo, it's so much easier to pretend your opposition is confused and elderly. It's pathetic and, quelle surprise, misogynistic. But the tide is turning...
Glinner, keep it up mate, you're an absolute star.
