These women are so awful but they've always been around. They were around at school, then at university, scoping out who had power in the classroom or in the student body - sometimes a man, sometimes a woman - and then aligning themselves with that person. They are often dim and talentless but sharp-elbowed enough, and ruthless enough, and from a comfortable and well-connected, complacent class so that they manage to get ahead, at least in a pool - in this case, publishing - where there are plenty more of the talentless but well-connected. It's a signal to those other no-marks that they know the script and will toe the line. They're truly sinister. The very stupid and unimaginative often are.

I learned recently about the concept of the "patriarchal bargain" (ironically from a woman who speaks and writes incisively about class politics, combating violence against women, workers' rights and collective organising, yet is still captured by the male entitlement lobby otherwise known as the gender cult - thus tendering herself as an example of it!), which often manifests in women going into bat for the men at the expense of other women. It explains a lot. I've seen women viciously attack radical feminists for criticising men with power and influence, or even men as a class - most recently, one claimed that another woman's concern about men supporting so-called "virtuous paedophiles" was evidence that Woman B was a paedophile in order to discredit Woman B's arguments (I don't think Woman A believed this, she was just engaging in a version of "I know you are, but what am I?", but still, it was extraordinary stuff).

One presumes that normally patronising a person of colour is a good thing until it is not. What should matter is someone’s intellectual argument. There is nothing more abhorrent than the modern lefts patronisation of people they deem to be of colour and then their rejection when they betray the line. Which seems to me tell you everything about the modern left. Treat people as individuals. Take their arguments on merits that you can ponder, discuss and disagree with. And keep identity out of it unless relevant. The modern left are the new racists. With their constant need to delineate people and subscribe subset to their agency.
