There's a lot of "they're just genitals" or "they're just bodies" in response to the women uncomfortable with male nudity in the women's area of the spa. That is what eroding boundaries looks like. That is grooming. It is gaslighting women and girls into letting their guard down around men, around inappropriate behaviour by telling them they are hateful bigots for objecting. So much enabling of this dangerous manipulation.
The penis-waver in the Wi Spa change rooms reminded me of the Four Corners doco about George Pell from a few years ago. True, he was acquitted on appeal and other allegations weren't pursued, but there were a number of disturbing stories about his behaviour and this doco featured an interview with a guy who was involved with the surf lifesaving club. One day, he says, he walked into the change rooms and found Pell, starkers with bits on full display, standing in front of a group of young boys. This enabled the concept of 'dysphoria' to spread as a catch-all label teens have been led to misapply to any number of life's woes, especially typical ones of adolescence, of being autistic, or any kind of outlier; struggles with sexuality, with abuse or trauma, and on....
And now we're at a place where the painstaking psych examination and treatments needed for young people who develop gender identity disorder/gender dysphoria, instead of funnelling them straight to hormones and surgeries, is instead becoming subject to bans. Crazy, unethical, heartless.
Terminology and jargon are far more potent in shaping and limiting our thinking than we realise.
The DSM, and it leaves out racism, misogyny, and entitlement, which are all psychological diseases in my opinion, with entitlement probably being the most dangerous of all. It's been a difficult week, the terrific Gary Powell, making serious points while being so funny has cheered me a little. Who knew, when Downfall came out that this small section would be the gift that keeps on giving. I loved the movie but love what people do with it.
