I still don’t really know why the response to The Walshes was so vitriolic. The first episode does what a lot of first episodes do, audience and actors getting comfortable, which sometimes takes a while, but there’s some cracking gags in there, and I still believe that Philippa Dunn and Niall Gaffney played the hell out of the Mum and Dad. For my money, Phillipa does the Irish ‘Mammy’ better than anyone, and Niall captures a certain know-it-all type that ferried me about Dublin in taxis throughout my late teens and early twenties. It’s still one of my favourite things I’ve done, so here it is again.
