Peaked a friend of mine a few weeks ago. She met up with some of her friends from Isle of Man recently (one in 50s one in 20s, both women) and asked what they thought. They were fine with it, thought she was exaggerating. When she asked if they thought it was OK for fully intact violent male offenders to be imprisoned with women, they said that wouldn't happen and more or less accused her of being a bigot. Despite Justin Webb and Andrew Marr getting Ed Davey to say the quiet part out loud, we've still got a long way to go because many people still have no clue what is actually going on.
This is what happens to me when ever I try to discuss it with anyone. And then I find it hard to stay calm because it's like why would I be lying? You know me to be a rationale and compassionate person. And they say things like where's the evidence so I send them evidence, but that never seems to work to get them interested. It feels like people have to get there in their own time, and they have to discover the evidence for themselves to believe it? I just don't understand why people aren't piqued to want to find out more for themselves? Why do some of us have this NEED to understand it? I don't know, I'm feeling a bit disspirited at the moment.
No evidence will work when people's identities are so tied up with this belief or that belief. A small analogy is liking/not liking a restaurant, a book, a movie, that another person doesn't like/does like. I have found many people find it offensive if you don't totally agree with them about everything. Pathetic humans.
