Neil Gaiman had this to say about me today.
I wasn’t going to publish the named exchange until I saw this but I really want people to know what a ghoul he has become and I’d like others to judge who has ‘changed’.
I first wrote to him after seeing this quote.
I wrote:
“My daughter is not the same sex as Eddie Izzard.
Your men's rights movement will not win, and you're a disgrace for not standing up for JK Rowling. How hard is it to say "don't send death and rape threats to female authors?"
He replied as follows, and again swerved the chance to condemn the death threats Rowling received.
Hi Graham,
good to hear from you. I think you're wrong about this one, but there you go. Funny you finding a year old Tumblr post -- I wondered why people were reposting it on Twitter. Ah well, maybe some trans kid will see it, and be comforted.
I've definitely said don't send death and rape threats to female authors many times in my history. I've even said don't send death threats to my wife, when she was getting them.
I hope things are going better for you -- I read about your testimony to the Lords (?) and it looked like you've been having a rough time out there. I'm really sorry.
all the best
Neil
I responded with this.
I’m wrong? So Eddie Izzard is the same sex as my daughter? You wouldn’t dare actually say that because you know it’s shite. And I’m not talking about your vague useless violence is bad shtick. I’m talking about your fellow author JK Rowling who just got a threat of a pipe bomb through her letterbox. How about specifically condemning that?
And then he took my breath away with his response. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the flippant, ghoulish cruelty he revealed with it.
He said:
Bless you Graham. I’m not debating you in email. And I hope if your daughter ever transitions you’ll be kind to her.
What a disgraceful thing to say.
I don’t have to tell you what a catastrophe this movement has been for young women. Abigail Shrier covers it in detail in her devastating book. And there are now so many testimonies from detransitioners that if you don’t know it’s happening, it’s because you don’t want to know. Here are Sinead Watson, Rachel and Keira Bell’s stories. May the words of these young women follow you to your grave, Neil.
Keira’s lawyer said of the case “For children not yet out of primary school…are they able to understand the nature of the information that they are being given? We say for children as young as ten, eleven or twelve to be able to weigh up the loss of fertility, the loss of sexual function, is simply not possible”'.
So to have this man glibly wish such a fate on my daughter, and then accuse me of having a mental health problem…. it’s more than I can stand.
Neil wasn’t always like this.
Someone changed, all right, but it wasn’t me.
Neil, you are a contemptible hypocrite. If you believe it’s true, tell us exactly why you believe that Eddie Izzard and Laurel Hubbard are the same sex as my daughter, or your wife. The one you only remember exists when it helps you avoid publicly supporting JK Rowling’s right to speak.
I can't think of anything to say that isn't swearing. What a disgusting response. It's obvious that he really has not (or dare not) engaged with this issue at all and his superficial 'allyship' is utterly transparent. His flippancy and arrogance are breath-taking. He's not worth losing any sleep over, You're the best of men, Graham, and this snivelling toady is not fit to wipe your shoes. He's got more faces than the town hall clock. What a hypocrite.
Really disturbing that he comments ‘I hope if your daughter ever transitions’ like that is something normal and natural for a young woman to consider either now or at some point in the future…….mind boggling.
