The people freaking out about a charity giving chest binders to teenagers “without parental permission!!” are upset because they believe children are the property of their parents. This doesn’t even seem debatable to me. It’s an indefensible reactionary, antifeminist perspective.

"97% of people who wear binders are harmed by them" was quoted at me. I looked up the study. It is defining harm extremely broadly; based on the same criteria, we should definitely make high heels prescription-only. And bras. And a lot of women's clothing. 🤣

Mermaids gives 13/14 year olds chest binders—even "behind parents' backs"!—for the same reason other services give them free condoms, contraceptive pills & abortions. Teenagers have a right to make informed choices about their own bodies, & this is historically a feminist view.

A binder is a tight vest, made out of sports bra type material. It's not a crime to wear one. It's a good thing that proper ones are more available now, along with info on how to get them on & off, size them properly, when not to wear them, signs you have the wrong size etc.
