What’s happened to Gillian takes my breath away. I know that isn’t the main point of this update but I didn’t know the full details before, and didn’t realise she’d also lost her husband while dealing with all this. Actually makes me feel emotional and I don’t even know the woman.

I’ve been a SoA member in the past and I know they very badly needed younger members (which I was at that time). I guess they think this kind of fuckwittery is the way to stay relevant.

It’s just so, SO “burn the witch”, isn’t it. Good wishes to you, Gillian, if you see this.

I know, I feel the same. I didn't quite put two and two together until I read the Eye's post.

Last month, I didn't renew my 40-year-old membership to the SoA because Joanne Harris signed that infamous letter last year in support of trans ideology (in response to a letter that had been in support of JK Rowling). I had complained about it at the time and been told that she'd done so in her own name. I didn't buy it. The SoA is supposed to be a 'trade union' fighting for *all* writers. The Chair shouldn't be partisan.

I had a short exchange with Joanne Harris recently on Twitter. She was incredibly disingenuous.

Can this writer not sue for wrongful dismissal? How can anyone be dismissed for a hashtag? Am I being stupid?

I don't think one can sue a publisher for ending its relationship with an author unless they break a contract.

Their days are numbered. As your Professor on here noted, these ideologue fanatics are up against biological fact. Also the logical conclusion of the erasure of the word 'women' 'mother' is the erasure of the word 'man' and 'father'.

"... ordered him to undergo urgent reeducation as the first stage of his rehabilitation."

What a bizarre phrase. It sounds like something out of Soviet-era East Germany. And it's not taking place in some bureaucratic environment, but in the creative arts where freedom of expression is supposed to be protected.

This happened in our local shiretown's city council. We had a queer flako as mayor (a purely nominal position, chairing council meetings and promoting Belfast) who didn't like that she was seen as a queer flako and decided the rest of the city council needed reeducating. I don't think she even served out her term because she graduated and left the area. Actually, I don't think the "arts" are that different anymore from the bureaucracy.

Is there no end to this craziness? These are supposed to be educated people denying reality and worst of all turning on a colleague. For what? Who or what are they doing all this for? None of it makes sense to a sane person.

As Harris says, the SoA is there to defend authors' contractual rights and not their personal opinions. By the same token, they should not punish them for their personal opinions either. Just shouldn't be interested in them one way or the other.

I’ve been a SoA member for more than 30 years. They’re good at contracts and keeping members up to date with publishing news in the journal. It’s outrageous they have failed to support JKR or indeed GillIan. Joanne Harris’s attitude is baffling. Authors’ earnings are often precarious and they should be able to hold beliefs in biological reality without being threatened with having their livelihoods threatened.

I'm sincerely hoping the Eye which is a magazine I've loved almost from boyhood is to be counted on as an ally in this fight, as they have been in every time there was a need to call out bullshit and hypocrisy. The danger it seems is getting taken over by an American publishing conglomerate.

JH really is up her own arse

She has been treated disgracefully. I’m considering having a bonfire of my Harris books.

Also interesting to read about Pullman’s ‘re-education’ as, not too long ago, he was being deliberately disingenuous on Twitter regarding how women’s rights clash with trans rights.

‘Hoist with his own petard’?

The bonfire comment was tongue-in-cheek, by the way.

Shame you have to clarify that but of course if you didn’t it would pop up somewhere. “Frothing Linehan loyalists advocate book-burning”

I love being a ‘frothing Linehan Loyalist’. Think that needs to be my new Twitter handle 😜

Good luck to her and her job is now a highly paid highly skilled profession. Harris is a cluster b narc stirring the pot. Glad PI showed her in her true glory.

A shame that Harris is another willing accomplice/handmaiden.

A transmaiden 😊

Off topic, but: great Mess, even with the ridiculous trolls, one of whom had the same name as the (ex-?)partner of an SNP MP.
