I simply thought that the word had been repurposed - dare I say ‘appropriated’ - to mean something else, like just a generic insult unrelated to sexual orientation. That’s how I understood it in the way people used to say it where I grew up. But then maybe it’s like the same way people say something is ‘gay’ when they don’t mean homosexual, but I suppose that is quite insulting.
