Watched her video sent to me by my nephew in NZ who is totally peaked I’m glad to say. A bit taken aback by the online responses to her situation which is that she shouldn’t have been attacked but by holding these dreadful views she deservedly attracted vilification. Now on what level of common sense could anyone think pretending men are women or that children should be medicated and mutilated into a pretence of being another sex, justify those attitudes.

i fucking hate trans rights activists. And what they believe. Up there with islamic state. Or they’d like to be, they’d love to string us up chanting some fucking bullshit. Self righteous fucking arseholes.

I'm Muslim, and they are very like Islamic extremists, they don't give a shit about Islam, it's a vehicle for their sadism and misanthropy. These bastards are the same, they've found a 'cause' or focus that facilitates their misogyny and hatred. I wish both were dead.

Indeed, i don’t associate Islamic state with Islam. Just that they both draw their strength from a deep well of poison and bullshit.

But all fundamentalists are the same, whether they're Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, etc. (I found the idea of fundamentalist Hinduism bizarre, but it's apparently a thing.) They all use religion as a prop -- paying no attention to any of the wise words found in their "holy books" -- something to hit other people over the head with.

Indeed.

You might be interested in an old post of mine in the Post Millennial, the closing paragraph of which was to raise the question of:

"... whether it’s true that as Muslim reformer Shireen Qudosi phrased it in speaking of Islam’s desperate need of reformation, 'either Islam needs to evolve or it needs to die'."

There is almost no space for reform movemt in Islam, there would be far too much opposition, and opposers are unlikely to express disagreement, and leave it there. It's easy to create a lot of hostility based on very little. Unfortunately, a lot of Muslims have only sketchy knowledge of Islam, a lot believe and do what their Imam tells them, and a lot are hard line literalists.

It actually states in the Qur'an that there should be no compulsion in religion, but in reality it's gone entirely in the other direction. The Qur'an doesn't ask women to cover their hair, it asks both men and women to hide their nudity. But ostentatious covering is either imposed or has become a source of pride for the wearer. If you go to East London, which has a large Bangladeshi population, the women look like they're from the Gulf states, head to toe in black and often wearing niqabs. Their mothers and grandmothers don't dress like this, it's the same with British Pakistani communities. Far too many young women and men are much more radical that the older generations. This comes Wahhabbi money in Saudi Arabia, that's being used to build schools, nurseries, and madrasas (religious schools) in the UK and many other countries.

Presumably, the other Abrahamic faiths established reform movements by ignoring much of their religious text. I don't see this becoming a feature of contemporary Islam. Sufism is probably the closest. Sufi's are far more focused on spiritual growth than fantasies about establishing an Islam state, something that hasn't existed anywhere for centuries.

Indeed -- thugs and psychotics for the most part.

Though their depredations are being "aided and abetted" by a "cast of thousands" on virtually all sides of the political, social, and scientific spectrum. From the demented idea of "self-identification"; to "gender-affirmation surgeries" turning kids into sexLESS eunuchs; to "biologists" peddling sex as a spectrum; to the many in the nominal Right cluelessly insisting that "sex" and "gender" are synonymous, there is more than enough blame to go around.

Me too...really hate them.

feel sorry for trans people that are responsible and respectful to women. I’m beginning to assume they are all the same, which i know they aren’t. But seeing a face bruised and beaten brings out the worst in me. Makes me angry.

Expand full comment

There are no "trans people." Hence there are none who are respectful to women.

exactly. there is no such thing as transition. just confused people pretending to be something they can never be. redrawing the map does not change the land.

on one end of the cunt spectrum we have owen jones who believes men should be able to self id and flap their she dicks around women’s faces in changing rooms- and claim discrimination if anyone protests, and the other end, a man hitting an elderly woman. These aren’t good people. I’m managed to never hit anyone in my life. Just hate violence, i guess that makes me pretty much a big old girl based on the mermaids gender scale. Wankers

Cunt?? Why the degradation of reducing women to genitals?

Apologies Betsy, i was angry, i didn’t mean any disrespect. I will stick to ‘arsehole’ in the future as my choice of angry name calling.

Breaks my heart that she can't see her grand children over a perfectly valid opinion. It's the personal sacrifices by people like Emily that make such a difference in the insane situation.

Expand full comment

Very best wishes to you Emily. I’m so sorry to hear about your estrangement from your grandchildren, I’m having to be careful not to have the same happen to me. What the hell is going on, how have so many been infected with so much insanity, hatred and intolerance?

Expand full comment

Discussed this with your earlier TT. I think we have a good idea what's going on. These people are well funded.. 🤐

Expand full comment

Absolutely, it’s terrifying knowing that so much power and money is behind it. What I can’t understand are the ordinary people swallowing it all.

Expand full comment

I take it by “ordinary people” you mean anyone unable to influence social policy, not social class. Although as has been observed before (by Graham, I believe), “For a social justice movement, it’s very middle class.” I can’t say I’ve seen many working class “trans kids”, I guess when everyday life is all about survival, you can’t afford the luxury of follies like gender ideology.

Expand full comment

No you’re right, bad choice of word. Middle class people with ‘luxury beliefs’ would better describe them, Kirstie Allsopp being the latest prat to out herself.

Meet Emily Steel, the elderly woman whose punch to the head by a counter protester at the Posie Parker rally was widely circulated & condemned on social media. She’s an unapologetic TERF, revealing her views have come at the cost of being denied contact with her grandchildren.

those poor grandchildren having a family member like that campaigning in hate against trans people's right to exist. a punch is not enough for an ideology like that.

I have never heard this type of hate before!

You're right. Never in my life have I seen such aggressive behaviour from one group to another.

Expand full comment

There are many more people willing to back it openly and casually and sadly I have seen it - it's got all the hallmarks of some very nasty stuff that's always been with us and found a new home online. Black pampers are the latest also very organised blackshirts of old. Far right kinds that are on watch lists. It's very hard to detect any difference to the levels of insane hatred and levels of violence and threat on display. They're extremists who are fond of violence. They've been working up to punching a woman full in the face livestreamed across the world for a while - look at what happened to Maria MacLachlan in 2017.

https://www.feministcurrent.com/2018/06/21/interview-maria-maclauchlan-gra-aftermath-assault-speakers-corner/

They've broken fingers and bruised many others. The police have usually 'escorted' and managed most protests the far right have had for decades but for some reason this lot seemed to have passed under their radar as 'not a threat'.

Does anyone know if the Eli(ana) Rubashkyn who attacked Kelli Keen with tomato sauce at the New Zealand rally is related to the Shlomo Rubashkin clan convicted in the Idaho Agro scandal and sentenced to eight years in prison?

What an absolute stinking coward it was who assaulted Emily. He needs to be found and the world needs to know who he is. I hope he gets beaten up in prison several times over.
