And the ‘no smoke without fire’ Lord (sorry don’t know who it was) seemed to be missing the point. But I think your examples of benign tweets resulting in lifetime bans will be something they’ll come back to. And Helen was SO calm and reasonable that her points have hopefully made an impact. Helen, your point about there needing to be an independent regulatory body set up to deal with all of this is brilliant (as long as the hiring of those people are not controlled by the cult of course!). I applaud you both for everything said today. Once the stream was suspended I stood here wishing all us on this side who were watching could go and rejoice together in real life, cheering on the fight in the sun! But instead was faced with an empty room - such is life and lockdown and this fight.

Average people and particularly women do not have access to these amplifying devices. It’s a class issue also certain classes dominate and remove themselves from reality. Example to expect the elderly, the poor or those traditionally excluded from public life to use advanced tech during Covid is an assumption people can, can afford or want to be forced to use tech is fallacious. Most people don’t have this access and hear only a small proportion of what is out there. For media the use of this viral technology poses risks to “cultural capture” based on whomsoever the dominant user or voice is. This does pose risks to democracy and risks, as Helen pointed out, the “weak” being disenfranchised, silenced and bullied. None of this is new, particularly for women and their children homosexual people also albeit women are a far greater oppressed group in number and in terms of access to protection or resources. So regulatory oversight is important as it is in any industry so antisocial activities don’t proliferate and effect us all. I did wonder about the question on real life manifestations given it seems to me normalising and platforming misogyny, sexual assaults and pedophilia along with significant abuse of power like Graham’s example of being visited by police seems excessive overreach, stifling of debate and both freedom of thought and speech within reasonable bounds which the converse cannot be said of the vile content debasing women that seem acceptable to them pornography being a good example. I certainly don’t think authorities have taken into account studies and evidence about the effects on women and children and even vulnerable men of this obscene content. Possibly the UK has done more than most so given this is a worldwide phenomenon it does beg the question to nations about their reach to block such content in a way I think it’s important to for the safety of the vulnerable. It is an incredibly serious issue and Governments must take the real world effects seriously and study them in depth holding platform owners and hosts accountable under the law for the effects of what is promoted just as broadcasting standards do. It’s not such a fine line to see proliferation of sexual abuse and murder IN REAL TIME and replayed worldwide being untouchable but women and allies being silenced for saying men aren’t women etc. It seems clear to me whose running the show on that basis and who and what this male dominated media panders to. It has to be acknowledged and moderated accordingly and we must all resist the DARVO being exhibited another age old tactic used against women, allies (simply look at witch hunts and history for evidence of this) and our rights and speech as well as a reasonable level of common day to day speech, colloquialisms,humour and satire remaining perfectly legal. You are both wonderful heroes to me!
