I thought of Patti Smith too. I think it's the way her hair is arranged

What an incredible woman. I have every faith that the tide will turn back in the next 20 years and people will see how awfully Joanne was abused, but unfortunately I don't think there will be much apology and I don't think there is any apology in the world big enough for what she's been through.

I think - and hope - it's gonna go much faster than that. Awareness grows exponentially and that's why the cult has been so fanatical about cancelling people - they knew it would grow that way once the cat was out of the bag. A year and a half ago I knew absolutely nothing about what had been quietly building into a tidal wave over a decade, but JKR changed all that. That's one wise and thoroughly principled woman and only now do I understand just what she was up to. She knew somebody would have to draw their fire if the world was going to understand what was happening, and she knew with her following she was the one who could do that better than anyone, and that for all their vitriol and abuse they would not be able to silence her. She didn't fall to the same gutter level and return the abuse and when Kerry Kennedy, President of Robert F Kennedy Human Rights criticised her she promptly and calmly wrote a letter https://www.jkrowling.com/opinions/statement-from-j-k-rowling-regarding-the-robert-f-kennedy-human-rights-ripple-of-hope-award/ telling them where they could stuff the award they gave her the year before, in the most dignified manner imaginable, and returned the award. What an amazing way to say "You don't and can't touch me. But still you're welcome to listen to what I'm saying". When I read that letter I was sold - my admiration for her reached the sky.

Many happy returns JK Rowling! and many thanks for what you did.

It needs to happen far far earlier than the next 20 years or we will have 3, 4 or 5 generations lives destroyed, laws will be in place that prevents it being spoken about and I could literally see gulags created for those who do speak out.

When I say 20 years, I don't think that's how long everything will take to change, I mean that's a point at which this will be looked back on as a mad point in history.

Our most right wing Swiss newspaper just wrote a glorious tribute to her.

Don’t like the paper. Like the article !

Thanks. This truly is a brilliant article, not just on JK Rowling but against woke idiots. Whatever her other views, Julie Birchill can deliver the goods when she rails at misogyny.

One quibble, she thought JK Rowling seemed humourless. A friend lent me the first 3 books and although I don't care for children's literature, there was plenty of wit and humour in those books, not to mention the wonderfully imaginative plots. I did not read the others however for the same reasons most responsible adults do not go near children's books: these aren't meant for them.

I'll check her adult thrillers however.

Well Birchill does correct herself when she discovers Rowling does have humour. Responsible adults can quite well read childrens books - why on earth not? Obviously it helps if you have a child to read them to, but I first read Tolkien as an adult before I got kids. I'd definitely recommend St. Exupery's The Little Prince and the Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren's wonderful children's stories, Pippi Longstocking of course but also Ronja the Robber's Daughter and Emil from Lonneberg. Astrid Lindgren in spite of a natural un self conscious feminism, treasured the child in herself; as a girl she loved climbing trees and continued to do so right up until she was fifty. The Alice stories and even Winnie the Pooh can be read at any age of course. There's definitely a treasure trove of Zen wisdom to be unveiled in the best kids literature for those ready to seek it. I have to admit I haven't read Harry Potter but I wouldn't exclude the possibility I may do so one day.

Expand full comment

Well, that's fair enough. I re-read The Little Prince recently and the death of the Prince still packs a punch and Alice in Wonderland is still marvellous. But the first 3 Harry Potter books were really aimed at young children so the style is quite simple. The other books I've heard of, esp. Pippi Longstocking. Having children is handy though, to get to read some great children's literature. I remember taking a friend's children to the movies so I could watch Babe :-)

It could be the Skoll Foundation. I'm trying to find an article I read about Guardian sponsors which supports trans activism. If I find it, I'll let you know

Thanks Tony. After reading the Guardian for 30+ years, every damn day, I am so done. Ironically somewhat it was my now TIM ex who introduced me to the Guardian as a teen. The only thing that was good about him and what happened. And now....not so much.

I’m not a fan, as such.

My kids were too old for her books.

Never watched a Harry Potter movie .

But I will defend her all the way, from the abuse she’s getting.
