He certainly considered himself a "true transsexual," because he said he remembered wanting to be a girl as a child, and sometimes put his sister's clothes on. (2 younger sisters, 1 much younger brother, who was doted on and never made a career for himself)
The piece that didn't see the light of day in the therapy he did with the "sexologist" was the abuse doled out by his father to him and his next younger sister at very young ages. He beat them with his belt. The father might have had some level of autism/OCD, as he didn't make normal eye contact and exhibited rigid thinking. He was always stalking around angrily, even when I met him years later. Why didn't I see it as family dysfunction and find a different boyfriend? I was only 18 and knew so little. The abuse story didn't come out until later, confirmed by the younger sister.
While Neddy's mother did not have agency, married at the age of 18 and had him at 19, I cannot forgive her. I see her and her silence in the face of domestic violence as a terrible mistake, borne of the lack of protection women in her generation grew up with, and the acceptance of physical abuse of children when it was "punishment."
My father was kind but exacting, using words. We knew we'd hear how we disappointed him when we messed up, words that stayed with you much longer than the red mark of a slap.
I think the first question that a therapist should ask a man who ideates being female should be, "Were you spanked or hit has a child?"
I see the nomenclature of AGP, transvestite, transsexual and so on, as part of researcher bias. They were asking how often, since when and how many layers of make-up, clothing, instead of what happened in your attachment to your father/mother. The general public assumes this is in the process of "diagnosis by experts" but it is not.
