Great to see just how much Stonewall et alia cares about children. No-one is trying to prevent or talk ADULTS out of " transitioning" if that's what they really want ,as long as they've thought it through although I don't think it should be paid for by the cash strapped NHS. Children ,on the other hand ,need protection from indoctrination by this damaging cult ,and therefore therapy and " watchful waiting " is the best course of action for them

That's NOT " conversion therapy" , it's protecting children from lifelong irreversible damage and regret.!! Transitioning children to validate an adult agenda is pure evil any way you look at it.! 👎😭 Thank you , Graham, for this post ♥️

Yes just my thoughts. In fact transitioning IS conversion therapy when you think it through.

RE. tantrum-like angry toddler poop threats -- so, in addition to metaphorically shitting on women, they have descended from metaphor to literal excrement. A new twist on the various toys being thrown from the pram. As for "Parsley", please please let this be his comeuppance. More than a slap on the wrist, an apology, a donation. Dolores Umbrage's snitch brigade could take lessons from this Master Snitch. He needs to be carried off into the woods by incensed centaurs. As for paedophilic men who identify as toddlers -- aren't they included under the "trans" umbrella? And finally, OJ, that puberty-blocked little man. A regular Malfoy.

Expand full comment

It is one view that Mr. Parsley returned to Twitter for one reason only. That is, to 'play the victim' and as a result have some degree of peculiar personal action in terms of gaining sympathy in some way. (From whom, I am unsure - perhaps his legion of worshipping acolytes... or Owen Jones)

Well, I would perhaps proffer that his latest 'ill-advised' Tweet to JK Rowling may well result in a certain degree of 'action' of another kind. That which may involve an official communication from 'chambers'.

Yes, I think that "ill-advised" is his undoing. Aw, too bad.

Saying you hold an opinion isn’t defamatory in Scotland. It cost Stuart Campbell nearly quarter of a million quid to find that out when he sued Kezia Dugdale.

She may get a retraction by the threat of legal action because fighting a defamation case against a billionaire will leave you destroyed irrespective of the outcome.

But you guys would be against the suppression of speech by billionaires yeah?

Expand full comment

I don’t know quite what kind of legal expert you are, but a number of actual ones (including at least one Scottish QC) were on JKR’s timeline pointing out that it’s unlikely ManAtBusstop’s wording avoids the tort.

And you’re of course wrong about the “billionaire” thing: a sign of your deep research no doubt. As is well-documented, JKR made herself a billionaire (from poverty) by her own creative efforts, and a millionaire by her own generosity & refusal to dodge taxes.

But maybe you could let us know at what income level you think it’s OK to be subjected to baseless accusations of being a danger to children?

And where your income stands in relation to that line?

Expand full comment

It's not clear that Alison Bailey understands that in Scotland (not England) comments that are found by the court to be defamatory still have the defence of fair comment. Kezia Dugdale's comments about Campbell, saying he was “someone who spouts hatred and homophobia towards others” was found defamatory but defendable as fair comment.

As ever there's a bunch of subtlety and context that would feed into any judgement but I don't think any of this is understood or in consideration by 99% of the people passing judgement right now.

Hey, happy to modify my comments to say multi millionaire or dollar billionaire if that helps but the general principle still stands. She has access to resources that mean you can use the court system to suppress speech you don't like.

FWIW I don't think she's that vindictive. We'll see.

Expand full comment

You have neglected to supply us with the precise income level above which you think people should be subject to baseless accusations of endangering children without recourse to legal protection.

And no: I wasn’t referring to Alison Bailey, though I’m looking forward to the court case at the end of the month.

Expand full comment

Alison Bailey is on twitter incorrectly saying commentary isn't a defence in a defamation action.

You don't need to editorialise your question (baseless accusations!) but I think that access to the legal system should be equitable and the punishments for misuse proportionate to the a persons wealth to raise the stakes for anyone bringing a frivolous lawsuit.

What damage do you think Paisley has done to Rowling's repuation and what losses has she suffered because of his tweet?

Is he a significant opinion maker wreaking widespread damage or just ManAtBusstop?

Expand full comment

You think saying a children’s author is a danger to children is fair comment? For the defence to apply: (1) the statement must be a comment and not an assertion of fact; (2) it must make sufficient reference to facts which were true and on which the comment could be based; and (3) it must be fair. Prefacing a libellous statement with ‘I think this’ doesn’t protect you otherwise it would be a free for all!

Expand full comment

And 4, of public interest.

I think it’d count, he’s made clear that his statement represents an opinion. He’s detailed the facts that lead him to that opinion and it’s of public interest.

Whether it’s a fair comment would be arguable as would whether the facts hold water, that she’s promoting someone who advocates trans conversion therapy.

I would say from a non-expert perspective Paisley’s statements are a lot more guarded than those of Dugdale about Campbell, which found for the defendant in the original trial and appeal.

Expand full comment

Why oh why are you here? What do get out of spamming like this?

Expand full comment

Whatever fyffes is up to here (and he being a reader of Dominic Cummings I doubt it's a gender agenda) I think pointing out that there's an essential difference between saying "in my opinion JK Rowling is a danger to children" and saying "JK Rowling is a danger to children", is important, since an opinion you can pick up anywhere including your own navel, whereas saying abruptly "JK Rowling is a danger to children" implies or at least suggests that you might have some evidence of that. (Which Paisley of course doesn't have.) I'm not a lawyer either so that's only my opinion that the second case would be much closer to libel.

Not that I wouldn't be as delighted as anyone to see the toad grilled in court, but I get jittery when I feel a lynching mood rising whoever the intended victim. It's after all what Paisley does all the time.

Green Party canvasser - pleasant woman - knocked on my door at the W/end. Said yes I did have a question: what is a woman. Watched the blush spread over her face. Said if I want the candidate - a bloke - will come & explain it to me. I wondered aloud how he would know, if she & I didn’t.

She then said this is about trans rights. I pointed out that it’s about women’s existence & rights: the science & the law. The Greens used to be the party that believed in science. She began “The science is that gender...” and I’m sorry to say I laughed aloud.

I might have been a bit too scornful, but it’s tough not to.

I'm sorry this is probably a stupid question... but are OWEN JONES & BILLY BRAGG aware that children and young people are being used as pawns for gender identity ideology, which has been around for about 15 minutes, Are they aware that children and young people are being EXPERIMENTED on with puberty blockers and affirming them to believe they're something they can never be, Are they aware of the Dangers of wrong sex hormones on young girls as highlighted by Elaine Miller? Are they aware that having 'GENDER DYSPHORIA' does not make a man a woman, in fact its a mental health condition that requires proper treatment and care. Are they aware of clusters of friends 'RESEARCHING' online about 'Trans' and coming to the conclusion they must also be 'Trans', its called the Barnham Effect/Forer effect, for e.g. Have you ever felt trapped? or Have you ever felt like you don't quite fit in? Then you must be 'Trans'. Mix that with teenage victim culture after spending 8 hours a day everyday online. Its 'called SOCIAL CONTAGION'.

Are they aware of the heart-breaking testimonies of 'DETRANSITIONERS' who were all 'Trans' until they weren't. If genders a social construct then what the hells the cross sex hormones for?? Are they aware that this is the 'Stanley Milgrim Experiment' on Children??? It’s often confronting reading the stuff on this site but after the conversion therapy news Twitter seemed full to the brim of TRAs screaming about torturing children. It took me a while to grasp what they were referring to. Making the assertion that others ‘must like torturing children then’. Leaping to that conclusion based on nothing. Having to join in with a pile on. I couldn’t quite believe it and had to stop reading. It is typical of their leaping to the most outrageous thing they can claim. Do they know what the word means? Any concept? There is no logical thread to that and I am losing patience for how they scweam and scweam without thinking about what they are saying and the impact it has on those they claim to speak for. Anyone and any topic can be drawn in to be used as collateral. The more sensitive the better. Are they sent a daily script, or is it that they see a Tweet and that’s it, that’s their thought on a subject? Where is the balancing or evaluation of ideas or evidence? Where is the caution? Nope, straight to the flamethrower. And constant bloody threats.

How are the TRAs more Daily Heil than the Daily Heil now? They throw accusations like this around and using exactly the same words so carelessly and by rote. Always hyperbole, always the most extreme, always the most hard done by. Interacting by threatening to get their way. Is it algorithms that like the shock factor and are they aware they do this? They don't seem that outraged about actual child abuse, but very keen to accuse people who aren't doing it of 'child torture'. Sitting behind keyboards losing their collective shit. If they thought about what that phrase meant for a second they wouldn't be freely throwing it as an insult to those not wanting children to have surgery, take hormones and make life-changing decisions based on dysphoria that they are being told they must have as they like the 'wrong' colour and don't fit in some very rigorously enforced gender stereotypes.

This seems to be a fetish for them – they are not the most abused, they are not the most murdered and while they are selfishly screaming for attention others that need help are being ignored.

Expand full comment

I've noticed TRAs use a lot of psychological projection. Eg Accusing women of reducing people to their biological role while simultaneously asking us to call ourselves uterus havers, birthing people and menstruators.

And saying GCs want everyone to stick to strict gender boxes when it's them who worship rigid stereotypes.

So when they accuse us of wanting to harm children, it's their way of letting us know that THEY DO.

Hi Graham, not too sure about returning to Twitter - possibly you're well out of it. It's a 250-character shouting match between tribes, scoring points over each other before everyone retreats back to their echo chambers.

As JKR pointed out, it has no nuance. And as Helen Joyce recently said, engaging with TRAs on it is a waste of energy and there are better ways to influence policy - and public opinion. Like this substack, for example :-) And a majority of the public aren't on Twitter anyway.

To be fair to Billy Bragg, he is right about male on male violence. More men are killed by men than women killed by men. However, what he and many people that use the same argument seem to miss entirely is that the male on female violence is a tiny, tiny, tiny bit more one sided than the male on male violence.

Expand full comment

But what is his point? That we should ignore single-sex spaces becuase men are victims of male violence too? That men need single sex spaces from women??! It does depend though on how violence is defined. With regards to physical violence then male on male violence is higher than male on female violence. However it is still men undertaking the violence and it actually adds weight to the need for greater safeguarding for women and children who are not as physically strong and less able to defend themselves. But how about sexual violence? How about psychological violence? I would argue that women are more often the victims of these types of violence.

Expand full comment

It was some rather unnecessary 'whataboutery' I felt. He didn't need to mention it in my view, and if he did, then he shouldn't have opened the argument with it. It was deflection in a sense, or misdirection.
