Lavery: "But for me, free speech is too important..." (at the end of that diatribe 'announcement).

Also Lavery: "No, not for Graham Linehan."

'Scholar', my arse. Shame on Berkeley.

Yes, it has, And good for them. The Twitter thread linked to by BatThink above is a good browse of their free speech values. If they manage to stick to this direction under pressure from all sides, I will be impressed and pleased.

The Guardian could learn a thing or two about their Free Expression values I think.

(Well, a lot realy!)

Dangerous, regressive idiocy.

This is partly because anything is now declared 'abuse' or 'abusive and hateful'. It seems to give free rein to actual hate profilerating. I'm sure she does get awful abuse, and as a woman in politics, but when having a different opinion is decried as 'abuse' or asking her to explain her position is deemed 'abuse', or even being consistent, it really blurs what actual abuse is. And the actual abuse women and men are receiving.

MPs who do and say silly things, or try to shut down dissent, or tell women to shush are likely to be called out. That's not abuse and we're not all bots. It must be very hard to have so many people disagree and be asked to put forward your view and support for certain causes in a cogent manner.

About the cycling: could the wonderful GC men co-ordinate with some women cyclists for the men to all enter one specific women’s event?

Let’s illustrate the cost of self-ID to women’s sports by having one sacrificial event swamped by men claiming to be female.

Even better: could the wonderful GC men co-ordinate with women cyclists to set up another cycling organisation open only to the single sex of biological women? "Women's Cycling"

Expand full comment
Feb 4, 2022Liked by mole at the counter

I think it may yet come to that, but that it would take huge organisational skills, commitment, fundraising, seeking sponsorship, negotiating use of grounds... And women’s sports don’t get much coverage anyway.

A demonstration as a one-off to highlight the absurdity should be cheap, require less time commitment, and could attract headlines along the lines of “Men invade women’s sporting event”...

Expand full comment

It's also really tough to have more than one 'Women's Cycling' in the area of 'Women's Cycling'. This underscores how the dilution of all these words has real-world effects. The TRAs refuse to give up the term woman and scream it in our faces. So women have no identifiable difference or category any longer.

When considering all the stakeholders you need to consult with on major consultations you discover the sometimes hundreds of different lobby groups you never heard of with very similar names. And it would inevitably be the women being seen as an offshoot or lobby group against the 'main' and funded 'women's cycling which is actually now including men as they 'identify' as women. You'd have to negotiate with all rights, and convince people that you deserve the place or admin support, or place on the field as they'll say, but 'Women's Cycling' already has a place or competition or coverage, do you want another? Why, as women are already represented? The fact the women include or are in fact men, seems not to register. The women box was ticked. Hurrah how inclusive. We get inclusivity points by including more men! And as we see with other sports, men who age out or underperform in their male categories can just switch categories and sex.

It's like setting up a new political party, called Labour (who still believe only women have a cervix) or Green Party (ditto) or SNP (ditto) or Liberal Democrats (ditto). You'd be trying to prove you are different by proving you are the same as what others claim they identify as or 'are'.

Expand full comment

Blimey! Well: as I said above, creating a league would be a lot of work!

So think it would be more organisable as a protest for a bunch of GC men to agree among themselves to all enter one specific women’s race. The rules allow it, if they allow self-ID.

Basically as a one-off, for the spectacle. To show British Cycling what it has done here.

Agree completely :-)

"Misinformation!", "HATE!", "bigotry!" (exclusively Transphobia) , probably "racism!" and obviously the actual "KILLING of hundreds of people" due to this platform existing.

I can't help visualising angry babies screaming these insults from highchairs because Mummy (or Daddy) hasn't adequately warmed the Alphabetti Spaghetti!

Also noted a few punters furious that Substack vetoes porn and erotica. I'm sure there are a couple of other areas online they could try.

"Because homosexuality was once treated as a fetish, all fetishes must now be treated as a sexuality."

That's such a brilliant, insightful observation. Gender ideology and queer theory have produced thousands of words dedicated to legitimising the effects of porn addiction as valid sexual orientations, then along comes one perfect sentence that blows it all away.

An article headlined 'The LGBT history you probably didn't learn in school' was published by Auntie today (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-57176199).

"In 1885, "gross indecency" between two men was made illegal - and in 1921, a similar law was discussed for women as well. But this didn't get very far in the House of Lords, partly because they didn't want to discuss the matter. This was, in part, because they believed women were so impressionable, if they heard about women having sex with other women, they might want to try it for themselves."

Whereas today politicians believe women are so impressionable they will believe humans can change sex and trans women are most marginalised group in society.

Expand full comment

That article is very revealing: it uses identity instead of orientation, and talks about organising ' the world around the kinds of desires that you have' as if that's a great improvement in our lives.

"Even in the 19th century, it's very difficult to talk about gay or lesbian identity," says Harry Cocks, associate history professor at the University of Nottingham.

.....

"People have always challenged gender norms and sexual norms," Prof Cocks adds.

"The idea that you can organise the world around the kinds of desires that you have, I think, is a very recent idea."

I think as much as the Spotify thing might be about Shrier and co, it's about artists who've always been unhappy about the cut they get from being on the platform taking an opportunity to be applauded for leaving it and generating sales elsewhere.

"Hey everybody I'm leaving Spotify on principle, aren't I great? Buy my DVDs on my website" is the rankest financially motivated virtue signaling.

Vis a vis the comment about Owen Jones I detect a disturbing degree of support for the state of Israel in the Glinner update of late. If you don't know that the Israeli government was the original propaganda purveyor that the TRA lobby learned much of their counter-factual, attacking tactics from... then you're a muppet. Israel disguises its war crimes with propaganda, the TRA lobby disguises its medical experimentation and misogynistic crimes with propaganda of exactly the same kind, and attacks its enemies with the same weapons.
