You are free to join. Being a female lone parent who cannot risk loss of my job, home and pension, my stakes are higher and safety must come first for me and my family. Being a woman of the left and the labour movement for many decades, I'm in shark infested waters, and as women are more likely to suffer the professional and personal damage of GC exposure, I have to be cautious. On Twitter, I have got professional and specific-interest accounts that are absolutely nothing to do with GC campaigning or politics. They are different silos. I don't see a TRA, MRA or GC account or tweet from one year end to the next. The thousands of people I interact with using those accounts do not experience Twitter as being "toxic": they are not interacting with "toxic" people or participating in "toxic" debates, they are focussed on a narrow range of content.
When I first started looking for GC content on Twitter it was a nightmare being constantly bombarded and harassed by TRAs. Then I got lucky and was put on a block-list and it calmed down a lot. When I am using my "GC account" I now rarely see anything that isn't GC-related because I am following almost 100% GC accounts. Some of it is "toxic", particularly when TRA and MRA accounts are bothersome.
If I had not been following GC accounts I would not have been made aware that Twitter protects paedophiles from "hate" (or MAPS as it calls them) and just how much porn and child sexualisation there is on the platform. That became much worse after Tumblr had a clear out and a lot of the perverts took up residence on Twitter.

Whatever the downsides of Twitter, it is always going to be more important than any other social media platform as long as Governments, politicians, statutory bodies, NGOs, MSM, etc. use it as their main means to inform and engage with the general public.
That, IMHO, will be the thing to watch. If they start to move or double-up elsewhere then that will start make a real difference and it will be worth investing personal and professional time, effort and even money in populating alternative platforms.

The shocker for me was when the plug got pulled on Gender Critical Reddit. 60,000+ mostly women from around the world suddenly gagged, made mute. That international women's public square nuked without warning, thousands of threads vanished, as you say. Nowhere even to talk about what had happened. Unbelievable. And because it was an attack in the virtual world, it has gone largely unreported, unremarked on.

Just wanted to give you a heads up on Jason Miller the CEO/founder of Gettr and how he treats the women and children in his life. One of his extramarital affairs resulted in him drugging the woman to induce an abortion (it worked). Another affair with AJ Delgado resulted in a son who he denied is his (he is his) and hid income to avoid paying child support. He admitted to hiring prostitutes and using massage parlours while married. This is what we know about him from court papers, I shudder to think what we don't know. Nice man eh?

This is all true, but I fear this may be unavoidable. Alternatives to Twitter are usually populated by people who get banned by Twitter.
The primary groups that seem to get banned are the far right, and gender critical types.
And so unsurprisingly, most of these alternatives like Gab, Parler, and Getter are teeming with the far right.
Everyone who can use Twitter just sticks with it.
I guess the other alternative is the Fediverse, with sites like Spinster.
