They now need to discipline those responsible for the campaign of harassment, both students and staff.
The words were fine, but need to be backed up with a full investigation, and those (whether staff or student) involved, facing due disciplinary process. If the threats found (I bet there will be more) are of a physically threatening nature, then the police should be involved. This is not "cancel" culture. This is calling out very bad and criminal behaviour that was bordering on terrorism.
