I'm confused. The talk was on bisexuality in sea anenomies. How is this a threat to the trans mob? They use the LGB freely enough to gain credibility so now the sexual reproduction in a species far removed from humans is a threat? Bisexuality is a threat? I've been informed for some time but I'm having trouble joining the dots here.

At first it was "the talk is transphobic", then the uni cancelled it and Vollbrecht did it on YT so anyone could see it was just a regular talk about sexual dimorphism. That's when the TRAs shifted the goalpost and claimed that Vollbrecht was transphobic as per some tweets. Vollbrecht tweets about sex being binary which apparently is transphobic.

They are trying to destroy her reputation. Several men have been aggressively tweeting about her. This has been going on for weeks now.

Meanwhile, anyone who watches the talk shrugs their shoulders. Some people did try to discredit the talk itself.

I completely forgot that in early June there was an article in the German newspaper Welt about the uncritical and often unscientific commentary on transgender on German public service broadcasting and especially in children's TV shows. The article was signed by several scientists, including Vollbrecht.

Not to my knowledge. I guess Vollbrecht was the easiest target as she is the youngest.

Some of them are on twitter, men and women, and are outspoken there.

Remember, everything is always a threat to trans activists. Start from there. Air is a threat, desks are a threat. Paper and electricity are particularly egregious. Don't get them started seems the rational choice. They pick on and harass everyone, so submit or else seems their MO.

I think Vollbrecht's case shows how to deal with this. If your talk gets cancelled because you or the talk is labelled "transphobic" just do it on Youtube so *anyone* can watch it not just the people who would have been there. In Vollbrecht's case the room where it was supposed to be held has a capacity of 150 people.

The Youtube vid was watched by 15000 people within a few days and has now reached > 135000 views.

Yes, it's brilliant but a rocky ride. Trying to shut her down and getting her more publicity and her getting wider public engagement as a result. It's odd how powerful our online world can be now in creating and countering this. It was the online forums where journalists found adult survivors of child sex abuse who'd been openly talking about their experiences there but had been silenced by authorities for decades (like with Jimmy Savile). And it's the flip side of active abusers and harassers online and in 'private forums' and who then are posting openly on social media.

Academics have some veneer of authority and their bullying and harassment of their colleagues is there for us all to see.

Its probably due to the fact that to talk about bisexuality, means one is going to be talking about sexual dimorphism and thus the binary of sex - female/male.

And that in and of itself is "transphobic". Truth hurts the poor binary ears of these persons. They do not want to hear of the truth - but equally they do not want *anyone else* to hear the truth. Just as a certain president in an eastern country does not want the people of that country to hear the truth that they are the instigators of a war on another country.

Stop the truth, refuse to listen to the truth, scream the lies, use force to silence the truth tellers.

Expand full comment

But in order to be trans you need to accept the dimorphism surely? My brain hurts....

Expand full comment

The trans people nullify themselves, it does make your brain seize up when you try to think about it.

Expand full comment

It sure does. How people, alledgedly intelligent enough to go university, cannot think through the logic and see that it eats itself, is beyond me.

Expand full comment

Yes! Mine too!

Expand full comment

Well, the thing is: in order to accept sexual dimorphism, you have to accept biological sex. Right? And these people categorically do not. According to them, there is no male and female. Because (let us not forget) Sex Is A Spectrum, and always subordinate to GENDER. Somehow.

Yeah, I know how loopy that sounds. But it's what these wackadoos believe. So of course they're gonna revile biologists. (Not to mention biology itself.)

Expand full comment

So if they say there's no such thing as male and female and everyone can be just what they want. Then there's no trans people because there's no male and female, so men can't become women or be in the wrong body, because there's no such thing as women, and they're not men anyway... and my head hurts I'm going to lie down.

Expand full comment

Indeed! It's a mind-bender. No logic. If you're in the cult and your brain has turned to mush then you're just repeating mantra but it's people outside the cult who should be pointing and saying "this makes no sense", not standing by and watching people be thrown under the bus. If her colleagues and the biology community at large stood with her and pointed out this BS then she would be untouchable. I get the personal risk, but it is mitigated in numbers. If the biology community cannot stand up for biology then how are the rest of us meant to defend it?

Expand full comment

Exactly, it's despicable that supposed scientists won't stand up for science and logic. All around us scientists or those who claim to be, are not standing up for science and standards of research, on the climate nonsense, the vax mess, covid etc, etc, etc.

What has happened to the people we used to trust? Have they all been paid off by someone?

Expand full comment

Yeah, I get they revile biology but I cannot follow the logic that it is transphobic. I just can't. In order to be trans you have to accept that there is something to be trans from. They liked it in clown fish and that was biology! My point was more that there is no logic and no rhymne or reason with what they like or don't like. Someone I know is the same. They say they are "non-binary" but in order to be non-binary there has to be a binary to be different from surely? I get that these idiots are nuts and wouldn't know logic if it jumped up and bit them, what I cannot fathom is how anyone else can fall for this and look at the situation and think they have a point! I guess the magic trans sparkle dust must short-circuit otherwise rational people's logic systems!

Not allowing themselves (or us) to discriminate correctly on factual matters might have pushed them over the edge mentally. I think it is getting clearer by the day they are not ok, they’re behaviour seems bizarre.

Okay— first question— is the troublesome Dr. ‘Dana’ Mahr a man? I looked at a photo and it seems this is a real possibility. If so — all falls into place.

Expand full comment

Of course it's a man. Try not to throw something at your screen as you hear the fake, high, piping voice 'Dana' uses when larping as a women. They call themselves 'womxn'.

As a woman in STEM of course they suddenly get interested in women and ageing when it's men that it's happening to. And of course they are involved with public 'education' in science.

What a shitshow. Not the most marginalised and using these tropes in Germany and German speaking countries is foul. There are specific laws, it's built into the constitution and many will be terrified about falling foul of these activists and these men. They're everywhere.

Oh Good God! So this person is not a scientist in any way whatsoever, despite the mumbo jumbo pretending to be one. Pretence all round. Just jealous of Dr. Marie-Luise Vollbrech who is a real scientist from the sound of it.

Expand full comment

In one section here, Mahr expresses concern for the wellbeing and safety of trans women in environments where they don't set the terms and conditions. The same position they are prepared to put women in, by demanding access to their spaces, whether it's lavatories, women's refuges, rape crisis centres or prisons, etc. But they're women! They're just the same, and this sameness isn't compromised when female prisoners are made pregnant fellow female prisoners. Does anyone want to think about whether the sex was consensual? Nancy Kelly, for example?

I feel great empathy for Marie-Luise and all those others who accidentally found themselves in this situation. Often it's a mild comment or unrelated-but-made-related statement as everything must always be about TRAs and all the time. In defending themselves it gets worse very quickly. Any humour or attempt to laugh it off is really condemned as hatred as you are not taking them seriously enough or agreeing to be cowed into submission. It shows how successful the trans lobby has been that it happens in strangely similar ways - the arc of these incidents is the same. The LGB Alliance conference in 2021 invited a few of those targeted to speak and the instant, insane level of attack is like other really seedy extremist sides of life and the internet. The Transgender Trend Fact & Fiction Webinar this year was also 'celebrating those who have dared to publish'. Remember, that might be liking or retweeting a tweet or post as social media refuses to see itself as a Publisher.

TRAs get their 'followers' to amplify their outrage, get politicians, public figures and the press involved, target your employer, colleagues, family and friends and wear you down until you give in. Friends ask who you are, why you were mean and bigoted and your whole world is turned upside down. No sympathy as 'you were a transphobic bigot'. People who aren't fully immersed in this follow along unaware. Anyone who refuses to be labelled is labelled extremist and right wing. Or fascist.

This is domestic terrorism and extremism - it fulfils many of the requirements and follows the same playbook.

These activists are very sick, deranged and nasty. Obviously psychologically disturbed. They seem to act in the same way in different countries, that Canadian one was the same, he picked on very vulnerable young women and persecuted them with court cases and harassment. There's scope for a psychological study for a brave person. They're not typical trans they seem to have sociopathic tendencies.

I found a couple of articles about this online, and this is interesting:

“Biologically speaking,” Ms Vollbrecht told 4W, “there are only two sexes. But that’s not to say that gender doesn’t have its place. Terms relating to trans ideology might be justified in sociology or gender studies,” she says. “My lecture was intended to explain the difference between sex and gender, because in German, they are actually the same word - Geschlecht.”

“Geschlecht” also means genitals/genitalia, according to wordreference.com.

Very confusing when talking about “trans” issues.

Expand full comment

Yes! I was very hesitant to try to translate from the German to English for this reason as it's not my MOTHER tongue. Some words in German are very similar to the English - but similar enough to mean something very different. Then borrowings or context. Journalisten machen mit um mich mit Dreck zu beschmeißen reminded me of 'besmirching'.

It's the biological reality and difference, then the behaviours attributed or socialised into/onto us that are all nicely jumbled up. Deliberately by sexologists and queer theorists. Who were often German or who borrowed from German philosophers or thinkers (Frankfurt School or Freud). Weird or misconstrued translations don't help this.

The lecture was not about bisexuality in sea anemones but about the binary nature of biological sex (in German, there’s only one word for both gender and sex) in general, with sea anemones as an example of a species that can reproduce both sexually and asexually through cloning. Another example was the kiwi blossom which comes in female and male - hence the 🥝 in many German sex-realist twitter profiles.

@Graham: If you'd like a piece focussing on the backgrounds and the details of the smear campaign against Marie-Luise, I'll gladly provide one. There is quite a bit to it: It's nasty even by the standards of the English speaking world, and in the German speaking world it's unprecedented. Been following this closely, plus, it is my native language. Just let me know.
