Lots of great new to report from the gender beat this week - enjoy!
And She Should Know
Renowned developmental biologist and Nobel Prize winner, Professor Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, was interviewed for EMMA magazine. She was forced to confirm that it is impossible to change one’s sex and spoke out against Germany’s planned self-ID legislation, describing it as ‘madness’.
“How you feel can be changed by social and psychological circumstances. But not biological sex. That is absolutely undisputed where science is really practiced… It is perfectly clear that transsexuals should not be discriminated against. When people are treated badly, that's bad. But they cannot impose their ideas on everyone as facts.”
U-Turn at the AAP
Moira Szilagyi, President of the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP), has stated that ‘affirming care’ for gender-diverse children and teenagers should not involve medicalisation. This is a complete reversal of the AAP's previous policy.
Szilagyi wrote an open letter in response to an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal. The article criticized the AAP's suppression of debate regarding their policy on ‘transgender children’.
“This is what it means to 'affirm' a child or teen; it means destigmatizing gender variance and promoting a child’s self-worth. Gender-affirming care can be lifesaving. It doesn’t push medical treatments or surgery; for the vast majority of children, it recommends the opposite.”
Leor Sapir, one of the authors of the original WSJ op-ed, said “This is a major step forward for those working to ensure science-based paediatric medicine”.
Oh Canada
It looks like even in Canada there are misgivings about the rush to medicalise gender non-conforming children.
Dr. Joey Bonifacio, a respected paediatrician who specialises in treating young people with gender issues, has expressed the need for caution. He believes that, in line with the UK’s Cass Review, Canadian healthcare providers must ‘slow down’ and provide ‘neutral’ care that is not weighted towards putting children on a path to medical transition.
It’s a ‘No’ from Liz & Rishi
Julia Hartley-Brewer interviewed both Tory leadership candidates for TalkTV.
She posed the same question to both Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, asking them, “Are transwomen women?”. Both replied “No”.
Everything in the Garden is Rosie
There was a great article in The Telegraph about Rosie Kay and her new female-driven dance company, K2CO.
“There is now this notion that you can’t talk about being a woman. Yet I’m a female artist and I’m going to make work from a female perspective. I’m not going to change that.”
Swim Out Sister
There was some brilliant female power and sisterhood in action in North London this week at the ‘Let Women Swim’ protest at Hampstead (Self-Identifying) Ladies Pond.
There was a splendid turnout.
With all sorts of amazing women in attendance.
And a wonderful time was had by all.
hehe great news and thanks v much JL - love that Famous Artist called Birdie's 'Let Women Swim' painting/poster!
Looks like the black pampers decided against making fools of themselves again by not making a scene at the Let Women Swim gathering. Let's hope they are seeing the writing on the wall. The writing that says the greater public are not with them at all, and that their shenanigans only prove this more and more.
