The festival organisers issued a statement to say that she will be “Taking the time to properly educate herself for a better understanding”.

Pitiful and creepy.

The entertainment manager (a huge bloke with a beard who will NEVER mistaken for a woman, not even by someone wearing dark glasses in a sand storm) has HE/HIM in his bio. He made a very public show of his horror and outrage and then resigned! (Bet he was just waiting for an excuse...) Heavy metal sure has changed since my day...

The enforced apologies and submissive language make my skin crawl. I would rather resign. How refreshing it would be for an organisation to disregard their PR and tell the activists to fuck off.

SO inclusive. Imagine a cadre of us natives, 1000s of us, all turning up to their ragefest. Sure we'd be welcomed, eh? ;)

"So-called ‘monsters of rock’ are throwing a tantrum over a bit of pronoun mocking and think they can lecture about inclusion to a woman who has spent two decades working in the most male-dominated genre of an already male-dominated industry." - I've always worked in male dominated industries and it is hard. Really hard. You literally have to work twice as hard to be considered half as good. They will make snide remarks behind your back, exclude you from the boys club and give you the shittiest jobs. Just look at the first so-called female four star general. The ONLY reason they are the first is because they were a man right up to recently and enjoyed all those rights and privileges that men have in male dominated industries. Wouldn't it be nice if the first woman was actually a female? As someone who has loved metal all my life - I'm disgusted at the prostrating they put Vicky through, only to have her "step back".

Couldn't agree more. As I said to Fintan, I used to show my face at Monsters of Rock in Donnington when I was in my 20s. Hard to imagine any of that crowd mewling over pronouns. "For those about to rock... please specify your pronouns."

I did too back in the day. Seems that it has changed beyond recognition from those days - Less "sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll" and all "gender, hormone therapy and virtue signalling" these days. It's not quite the same somehow.

“Taking the time to properly educate herself for a better understanding”. Definitely the language of freedom of thought and conscience, there. How could anyone think this is a cult?

I'm really disappointed this woman didn't tell them all to take a running jump instead of kowtowing to these authoritarian areseholes.

Absolutely Jeremy. I sort of, kinda, used to know Vicky a little bit, back in the day. She is tough af (she's had to be!), insanely hard-working and committed. I'm so very sorry to see this happen to her. I guess she had no choice - the festival organisers made it very obvious she was on her own. So she had to grovel on her belly. And they threw her to the wolves anyway. Fuckers. I can only imagine how she must be feeling.

Thanks once again ,JL ,for the update ,even although it made me more angry. . Well done to all the brave ,principled , people who stand up to these misogynistic bullies ,but why oh why do some people make gringeing and sick making apologies to the TRAs ,simply for speaking the TRUTH. I would cut my tongue out ( or my hands off ) before I would apologise or retract , either verbally or in writing ,a single word of proven fact !! Caving in to the bullies does the GC movement absolutely no favours ,but only gives the other side more power. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile !! We cannot afford to compromise or make any concessions whatsoever when women's rights and children's safety .are at risk . Iagree totally with Posie Parker among others on this issue .What kind of person ,regardless of philosophical belief can think it's acceptable to threaten an 81 year old WOMAN ,or indeed any WOMAN with death ,rape etc ? Utterly despicable !!

With Attwood I am left with the mental image of a coward throwing innocents at an approaching monster in order to try and save herself instead. It only increases my respect for all those people who have shown courage in the face of this monster and stood their ground despite the personal consequences.

Admiral “Rachel” Levine has ALREADY stolen a “first female admiral” from a real woman. Copying the following rage from another site, wish I could take credit:

“The first female 4-star admiral was Michelle Howard, a black woman who actually served in the Navy and commanded US Naval Forces as a real admiral. By contrast, Levine is not female, and has never served in the navy or any branch of the military.

“Howard was also the highest-ranking African-American in the US Navy, but let's erase all her achievements so someone who was a man until the age of 50 (and still is) can be awarded a distinction that he doesn't deserve because it's LGBTQ+ Revisionist History Month (during which homosexuals are being completely ignored).”

See Wikipedia entry for Michelle Howard:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelle_Howard

Expand full comment

I completely take your point and understand your anger! However, Michelle Howard was a four star officer who served in the US Navy, Levine is a four star office serving in the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (a branch of the uniformed services committed to the service of healthcare). They are two separate organisations. To be fair, I don't think I've seen Levine hailed as the 'first four star female officer' ever, but in this particular corps. And, of course, he isn't. No woman has attained four stars in the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. And when one does, she won't receive the acclaim she deserves.

Expand full comment

Thank you, JL, but actually the press coverage is sly. They trumpet Levine as the “first openly transgender* four star admiral in all eight uniformed services,” but then go on to use female pronouns and refer to him as “female.”

Thus the reader is left with the distinct impression that Levine is the first female 4-star admiral in all eight uniformed services.

The US Navy comprises 375,000 active duty personnel. Before retiring, Adm Howard was appointed the second highest ranking officer in the Navy. Covering Levine’s appointment to head the US PHSCC (with no non-officer personnel and a mere 8,000 uniformed officers) is like comparing the manager of a local Tastee-Freeze to the head of General Motors.

(*duh, until 2 minutes ago, even GAY service members could barely advance in the armed services, let alone transgender ones)

Just one more example of transgender news items eclipsing he achievements and accomplishments of women. As another hero of mine said, “No, thank you.”

Expand full comment

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one Helena! Some of the press coverage might be rather woolly in the text, but all the tweets & headlines I've seen (like those quoted in the article) have clearly specified the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.

But I certainly agree that it's laughable his appointment is being so lauded. I doubt an actual woman would've received anything like such acclaim and congratulation.

Expand full comment

I can't even bear to look at Levine's smug face. How can he be "openly transgender" and yet still be referred to as female? Since when did they also acquire the use of female to apply to men?

Another one of the (many) trans dichotomies. Celebrated for being transgender (stunning & brave etc eyc) yet somehow also literally female.

Most normal people think pronouns are laughable. My partners work colleague, a left wing psychology lecturer refused to put his pronouns next to his name on a zoom psychologist's forum and when someone demanded he tell them, he said "I'm not doing that. You can see what I am", he was booted off!
