I agree but isn’t it weird that we should have to vote for a man and not a woman for women’s rights. So many women seem to be heading the trans women’s lobby.. do you think they have been set up?

Anyway thanks I will join the Green Party and vote for him because he is the only politician raising his head above the parapet

I know, it's annoying. TRAs always use "it's mostly women that support us" as a gotcha. Sadly many women are socialised to do what men say, growing up in households where the father rules and brothers have privileges.

And a lot of daddy's girls know exactly how to play men to get work privileges etc

Sadly too many excellent women have resigned or been hounded out by harassment and appalling treatment.

Censured, suspended, threatened by expulsion, now just too scared of taking more hits.

Shahrar Ali has been there throughout.

He's a Marmite character, but strikes me as solid and principled.

Maybe it's time to make an apology and invite them back. Many women will never return to the Green Party or politics.

Expand full comment

I know what Marmite is, but what is a Marmite character?

As the Marmite advertising campaign would go: Marmite...you either love it or hate it.

I was waiting to see which one would break rank and here he is! I'm hoping this isn't like when many joined Labour.

Agreed. If we join up and are let down, we can leave again.

No, Paula, don't hold his being a man against him. The Good Men & True NEED to be standing with women and it's so good to see them now rising, albeit still too slowly. There is nothing wrong with women accepting help from The Good Men & True at all. They have integrity, as does Graham, they care about us and are solid rocks, standing against all those who want to harm us. Together, women and men, together, will win this war against us.

I agree. The more men we have on our side, the better it is for women.

Shahrar is great - sane, focussed on the environmental crisis, pro-women's rights, not afraid to stand up to the gender zealots, an experienced campaigner, very articulate (he is currently Green Party spokesperson). Definitely gets my vote.

Of course it's ultimately up to you.

Let's get on board again!

Ali tweeted yesterday

' I will not stand by as a novelist receives rape and death threats for publishing a thought piece. I understand that a rape victim has a right to be examined by a clinician of her sex as a matter of basic human dignity.'

Whoever would have thought that we'd reach a time when this needed to be even said out loud. Note the Guardian headline 'Green frontbencher at centre of trans rights row to run for leadership' as opposed to 'Green party to offer 'young intersectional feminist leadership,'' referring to Womack and Osmond who identifies as 'trans and non-binary.' Presumably that makes her doubly special.

I never thought that a woman would have to indicate a preference for being examined by another woman, especially in a case of rape, but...here we are!

Simply identifying with a label or pronoun now is a career booster. How stunning and brave, they say.

Oh wow, that's great!

I hope he wins. It might strengthen GC members of the Australian Greens to push back against ideological capture of the Greens here.

I was a Greenpeas activist in the 80s & 90s, but lost heart when it started hiring vast amounts on HR & other corporate BS. I've rejoined The Green for this, as Shahrar deserves support.

I did join the Workers' Party for the same reason but I might ditch that direct debit for this one. Thinking about it. I have been a life long Labour Party interspersed with SWP now I spit on them both.

I was a member of the SWP for a while. I don’t blame you.

Thanks for the tip-off. I had abandoned them over this issue, but have just joined again. He is clear and unequivocal, while the rest tiptoe and use coded language. He's got my vote.

In NZ, our Green Party are hyper-woke. So no luck for us.

They are here too (I finally left after they referred to us as 'non-men') but the sands are shifting. Don't give up and make sure Jacinda knows exactly how you feel.

"Ali, a former party deputy leader, said: “It’s a very difficult debate to have reasonably, calmly and thoughtfully, and that’s all I’ve ever done and sought to do.

“In any arena of equalities, if you’ve got a group of people who feel that they are affected by the claims of another group of people, that requires negotiation. And in order to negotiate you need to debate, and tease out and interrogate other people’s assumptions, if only to work out that there’s misunderstanding.

“And I do feel that kind of debate and culture is in increasingly short supply, in society and in political parties.”"
