Stuart Campbell delivers some home truths to 'Mister Science'
Stuart Campbell of Wings Over Scotland was appropriately incensed by Robin Ince’s latest brain fart and left this comment under the piece. For some reason, it didn’t survive the moderation process.
This is such tiresome, pious, point-missing garbage. All Ricky Gervais did was repeat the words of transactivists, which they now apparently consider outrageous. The "rape" line was literally taken almost verbatim from the tweet of a transactivist last year, who said that it was disgusting to misgender someone just because they were a rapist.
The thing that leapt out at me from "Supernature" was ironically enough the compassion of it. Because the kindest things you can do to human beings are (1) tell them the truth, and (2) make them laugh. In a time of universal deceit, when people are hounded and harassed and attacked and vilified and silenced and lose their livelihoods just for stating basic biological facts, telling the truth is a brave and revolutionary act, and to do it with laughter is doubly admirable.
Your cowardice on this subject is abysmal, and I say that as someone who's seen you live multiple times in Bath and Edinburgh and used to consider myself a fan. You run away from every difficult question or argument, and I'd happily say more here but I don't want to waste my typing on a comment I suspect you won't have the courage to publish.
Let there be no doubt whatsoever: Ricky Gervais is the good guy here and you're on the side of evil. I use that word in complete calmness and with careful consideration. Mutilating and sterilising confused children is evil. Terrorising rape victims is evil. Taking away vulnerable women's rights to be away from people with penises is evil. Bullying lesbians into having sex with men by calling them bigots and sexual racists and genital fetishists is evil.
Five years from now when this insanity has burned itself out and all the inquiries are going on into how it was ever allowed to happen, you, not Ricky Gervais, will be the one deleting his Twitter history and pretending you didn't say what you said. But we will remember.
By the way I should also add that I emailed this piece to Robin.
The interesting thing about the Gervis furore is that TRA seem to be the only group to be offended by his material. Where are the disability groups complaining? The womens groups? Chinese people? Every one else's seems to be able to have a bit of a laugh about themselves. They know what they he is saying isn't true. Its funny. But it's slightly different when it comes to cracking trans jokes because it IS the truth and the truth hurts them.
