And this is how they get us. It is remarkable that someone recently admitted to me their role very briefly and in passing in ending apartheid. I was that astounded that it was like a physical blow to me. I assumed they couldn't have known my personal connection or what people I knew did. I had never met him but recognised his particular accent. My mum was a dab hand at writing letters to apartheid prisoners, SA prison governors et al during the AAM campaign. She could write more letters than we could afford to send. We received a few letters from prisoners & their families after they were released. One was from a prisoner who my mum had latched on to as his situation was particularly egregious. He said that after the prison governor had received circa 50 letters (my ma was sending 4 or 5 a week!) the prisoner was given much improved conditions inc' family visits. After another 50 the governor told the prisoner to tell his friend (my mum) to stop sending him letters, as they were causing him to have bad dreams!
Oh I love this - thank you so much for telling me! People can moan at me about writing letters (or engaging with processes, or finding out, or voting, or meeting, or speaking up or trying to do something, anything, whatever you can) and people have even said to me that they feel like weirdos 'going on' when they are interested, they do want to get involved, do care, do what they can and don't feel they (or we) are getting anywhere. A 10-day sentence will probably be served in jail rather than prison, and unfortunately jail conditions tend to be the worse of the two across most of Europe.

Putting people in jail for stating a scientific fact is beyond dreadful. Thanks for the info' big G, I've sent an email to the authorities and encourage everyone reading this to to do the same. I often did similar during the anti-apartheid campaign and lots of critical communications were often highly effective in improving situation for prisoners. Solidarity with Emanuel Brünisholz!
And this is how they get us. It is remarkable that someone recently admitted to me their role very briefly and in passing in ending apartheid. I was that astounded that it was like a physical blow to me. I assumed they couldn't have known my personal connection or what people I knew did. I had never met him but recognised his particular accent. He may have been spouting exaggerated whatevers, who knows; we are not in that land or time, we are many decades from those days, but still the power of what happened and what touched us stays with him and with me. Generations later. That's the point - we hope there will be those who will fight for us, and those we will never know, who could never meet us, or our people, but who protect and care for us. When we are unable to, others take and keep that flame safe for us.

The parallels are obvious - the 'sides' are now the same, but different, and this vile fetishistic movement has corrupted things and turned them inside out so that all those hard-won lessons were forgotten or misapplied. My mum was a dab hand at writing letters to apartheid prisoners, SA prison governors et al during the AAM campaign. She could write more letters than we could afford to send. We received a few letters from prisoners & their families after they were released. One was from a prisoner who my mum had latched on to as his situation was particularly egregious. He said that after the prison governor had received circa 50 letters (my ma was sending 4 or 5 a week!) the prisoner was given much improved conditions inc' family visits. After another 50 the governor told the prisoner to tell his friend (my mum) to stop sending him letters, as they were causing him to have bad dreams!
Oh I love this - thank you so much for telling me! People can moan at me about writing letters (or engaging with processes, or finding out, or voting, or meeting, or speaking up or trying to do something, anything, whatever you can) and people have even said to me that they feel like weirdos 'going on' when they are interested, they do want to get involved, do care, do what they can and don't feel they (or we) are getting anywhere. I shall remember what you've written :-)

I figure prison in Switzerland has got to be nicer than a budget hotel in London.
A 10-day sentence will probably be served in jail rather than prison, and unfortunately jail conditions tend to be the worse of the two across most of Europe.

Sometimes I just cannot get my mind around the mental acrobatics to understand how anyone can think it is the right thing to send someone to prison for stating an observed, evidenced and demonstrable fact.
