A Mumsnet post about whether it is appropriate for schools to engage with Stonewall has so far received over 800 votes, with a massive 90% of people agreeing that the organisation should have no place in children’s education.
I asked Hannah, who posted the original question, about her post.
“After writing a ton of emails to my MP, local Councillors and the Department of Education’s (DofE) Relationships, Health and Sex Education team, and not being able to get a conclusive answer as to who is responsible for ensuring an organisation which breaches DofE guidelines is not permitted to work with schools, I wanted to hear the views of other mums. “
One day in, the post has received more than 350 comments, the vast majority of which express concerns with Stonewall. There is a consensus that lobby groups generally should not be targeting schools (which the government agrees with ) and that Stonewall in particular has very worrying political ideologies, rooted in Queer Theory, which should not be taught to children.
Here’s a selection of comments.
This is not the only Mumsnet post recently which has questioned the implications of gender ideology. Following Helen Staniland’s suspension from Twitter for asking the “Staniland Question”, several threads were filled with discussion about whether people should be allowed to discuss women and girls having the privacy, safety and dignity of single sex spaces when undressing and showering (here’s thread No.4)
I also posted with regards to the number of trans identifying nurses and midwives, and asked whether women should have the right to request that their care is carried out by a female.
In all of these threads, the responses have overwhelmingly supported the ‘gender critical’, or rather, the common sense stance, which further supports suspicions that the majority of people do not agree with the principles of Queer Theory, they do not agree with the erasure of women’s rights, and they do not agree with the transitioning of children. This is precisely why transgender rights activists do not want a debate, and why we must keep asking the question: Am I being unreasonable or…?
I'm loving it that the subject has taken root in the heavily traffic of AIBU, instead of staying hidden in feminist chat. Such an inspired move from the poster who got things going with the Helen S ban thread... that turned into threads. Everyone saw how much traction the topic could gain, how many people care, how many were interested but had been unaware, and how little support gender theory has when applied to our day to day lives and needs. Plus such great work going on by GC posters sharing information and videos and debunking myths.
There's one about Alex Sobel now too. I think a lot of MPs will be getting asked their views in a snappy question as a result.
Been brilliant watching it all unfold.
This gives me hope. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned - especially if they're a mum.
