Some of the good news stories from the gender beat this week. Enjoy.
Lia Is Still Peaking The World
Sonia O’Sullivan, former medal-winning track and field athlete, spoke out about trans-identified males competing in female sports in The Irish Times.
“Women’s sport exists in order to allow women compete on a level playing field against other biological born women; it is not a category one can transfer into… It’s no good kicking these matters down the track until it becomes a bigger problem. There need to be some decisions made when it’s already an obvious problem for women’s sport.”
Former Olympian and politician, Sebastian Coe, expressed similar sentiments this week with the story covered in numerous media outlets, including The Guardian…
And the BBC.
US journalist and podcast host, Megyn Kelly, described Lia Thomas’s victory as ‘a farce’ and talked about ‘decimating women’s sports’.
Ron DaSantis, the Governor of Florida, issued a proclamation declaring Emma Weyant the rightful winner of the Division 1 500 yard freestyle race, refusing to recognise Lia Thomas as the champion, and lambasting the NCAA.
“Florida rejects the NCAA’s efforts to destroy women’s athletics, disapproves of the NCAA elevating ideology over biology and takes offense at the NCAA trying to make others complicit in a lie”.
A group of University of Arizona Swimmers, which includes long-time head coach and USA Swimming national team director, Frank Busch, and 2008 Olympian, Lacey Nymeyer, have written to the NCAA to express their dissent.
“Do we have a voice? The people responsible for protecting women’s swimming should swiftly rectify the guidelines. The women from the University of Arizona will not quietly stand down while our victories and accomplishments float away.”
Women Won’t Wheesht
Following on from For Women Scotland’s legal victory regarding the Gender Representation Act, the remedy hearing was heard this week.
It found that the appeal had succeeded on the primary argument (that the definition of ‘woman’ was beyond the legislative competence of the Scottish Parliament) so the group has been awarded full costs.
Spousal Exit Clause
This week the government published its response to the Women & Equalities Committee Third Report on the reform of the Gender Recognition Act. It has recommended to retain the spousal exit clause.
“A marriage or civil partnership is a contract between two individuals, the nature of which cannot be changed without the consent of both parties. For this reason, we consider it is equitable for the ‘spousal consent’ requirement to remain in place.”
Glinner Of Hope
Don’t miss Graham’s interview on the Stephen Nolan show.
“I know I’m right… Sex is important. Women are real.”
LOVE the cat!
Another bit of good news...."The Danish government states there are only two sexes. Men and women." They acknowledge that an individual may "feel" they are not the sex they are born, but the Gov also says that is not a basis on which to create laws/policies.
First country to return to common sense.
