A Week in the War on Women: Monday 27th September - Sunday 3rd October GOOD NEWS SUPPLEMENT
Sorry about the late arrival!
Hello again. Here are just a few of this weekโs good news stories from the gender beat.
Judy Packs A Punch
War creates strange allies. In this case, Judy Finnigan in The Express, writing about โthe extremist transgender lobbyโ intent on female erasure.
โWe wonโt be โcancelledโ because a tiny minority canโt forgive us for being born women.โ
Indeed we wonโt, Judy.
Another Domino Falls
Lancashire Police have joined the ever-burgeoning list of organisations to leave Stonewallโs Diversity Champions scheme.
And this is big news given that only a few months ago they seemed determined to remain a member.
A Sporting Chance
The Sports Councils Equality Group has published new guidelines for transgender participation in sport. This report concludes that current policies are not fit for purpose and need a thorough overhaul.
"For many sports, the inclusion of transgender people, fairness and safety cannot co-exist in a single competitive model".
Donโt Mention The Cervix
Despite the fall out from cervix-gate, there were causes for joy at the Labour Party Conference. Listen to Bronwen Daviesโ brave and blisteringly good speech.
Labour Womenโs Declaration held a hugely successful public meeting.
Not only was this meeting extremely well attended, it involved many awesome women speakers including two Labour MPs, former Welsh rugby player, Tonia Antoniazzi and the incomparable Rosie Duffield.
There Is Nothing Like A Dame
Former chief scientific advisor to the Scottish Government and European Commission, Professor Dame Anne Glover, has spoken out about the Scottish Governmentโs plan to reform the GRA.
โIt doesnโt concern me that trans women and trans men want to have their rights verified but the denial of basic biology & the psychology of women, particularly those that have gone through trauma, makes no sense.โ
Re-Joyce
There is a great interview with Helen Joyce in the New Statesman this week.
โIn certain circumstances, women need to be able to exclude all malesโฆ They need not to be called bigots when they do that.โ
Terfanosaurus ReXX
This crowdfunder made me giggle.
All power to you, sisters!
Talcum Gets Burned
Owen Jones had the audacity to tweet thisโฆ
And here are just a few of the glorious replies!
Brava, ladies!
Liz Spells It Out
Minister for Women and Equalities, Liz Truss, made an unequivocal statement about the provision of single sex spaces in The Times.
โThe Equality Act is very clear that single-sex spaces should be provided for and organisation should be able to distinguish on the basis of biological sex.โ
Oh, thanks! I was despairing of seeing some good news. There have been some great moments this week with the wonderful Rex Landy but it's still a long slog.
Good to read somethingi upifting. These reports are so well put together, thank you JL.
