A handful of the good news stories from the gender beat this week. Enjoy!
Taking Stock
The brilliant Professor Kathleen Stock OBE has been shortlisted for Columnist of the Year by the UK Press Awards.
“Kathleen Stock is that rare thing, a weekly columnist who never fails to say something new. Her range is remarkable… Armed with a logician’s brain and an entertainer’s panache, she shows a remarkable ability to make the gnarliest of subjects accessible. Her analysis is watertight; her flourishes are filled with vim. Stock’s calm head and capacity for erudition has turned her into a must-read columnist.”
Huge congratulations and the very best of luck, Professor Stock!
No Gender Please, We’re British
A ‘non-binary’ American male has lost his legal battle to have his ‘gender identity’ recognised in the UK.
Ryan Castellucci, a US national, changed his legal gender and birth certificate to ‘non-binary’ in the state of California in 2021.
Now resident in the UK, he brought a legal action against the UK Government after failing to get his ‘gender identity’ legally recognised here. He lost. In their ruling, Lady Justice Elisabeth Laing and Mrs Justice Heather Williams dismissed Castellucci's High Court bid stating, “Whenever the Gender Recognition Act refers to 'gender' it refers to a binary concept - that is, to male, or to female”.
So Over The Rainbow
WPATH’s worldwide membership has dropped dramatically by 60% during the past year. “The future for gender affirming healthcare at a global level now looks rather uncertain.”
WPATH global membership was 4,119 in January 2023 but as of 4th January 2024, it was just 1,590. Peter Jenkins of Thoughtful Therapists believes this is because “WPATH has experienced a number of major setbacks to its professional standing and credibility during the past year”.
A More Civil Service
The Government is said to be cracking down on the civil servants engaging in political activism and spending tax payer’s money on EDI schemes.
We have reported in the past on the ideological capture of the Civil Service. The Telegraph reports that the days of the Whitehall gender zealots could be numbered. “John Glen, the Cabinet Office minister, has ordered a review of Whitehall diversity networks and a ‘refresh’ of civil service impartiality guidance to stop officials ‘using their jobs as a vehicle for political activism’”.
Glinner Of Hope
Don’t miss Our Graham on The New Flesh podcast this week.
And talking to Sall Grover on the Giggle Podcast.
What a fantastic and well deserved comment on Kathleen Stock. The fact that it makes the twerps at Sussex look even more pathetic for losing such a brilliant mind, is a bonus.
I love the fact that the judges said that the word gender, in the gender recognition act, refers to a binary concept, male or female. Brilliant! 😆
WPATH losing members, excellent.
Now the Conservatives just need to get on and do what they keep promising.
Thanks JL, wonderful news.
Thank you for this good news, Graham. More good news is that Jo Phoenix has won her against against the Open University. Much to celebrate today.
