A chat with Polly Clark

Nice to talk about the craft of writing for a change!

Polly Clark is the poet and novelist behind Tiger, Larchfield and the upcoming Ocean.

Almost as soon as I arrived in London two years ago, we became fast friends, and since then we’ve been engaged in a continuous and ongoing conversation about women’s rights, cancellation, stand-up comedy (she’s my first audience) and, most of all, the craft of writing. Without her, I’m not sure I could have summoned the necessary morale to finish my book, and I have to thank the angelic Jane Harris for introducing us.

Polly ‘came out of the closet’ recently as a believer in biological reality, and is already facing repercussions. Her Substack is one to watch if you have an interest in the craft of writing, the future of publishing, and the writer’s role in a suddenly unrecognisable world.

As for the interview, I'm thrilled that it has captured the substance of hours of conversation while watching the evening fall across the water from the deck of her boat.

Thank you for everything, Polly, and bon voyage.
