What kind of organisation misrepresents the Equality Act to businesses and institutions all over the UK, weaponises intersex conditions to further the cause of getting men into women’s spaces, and dishonestly casts the Caster Semenya decision as racism, recklessly pitting black people against white women?
An answer comes in the form of their Glassdoor reviews, (thanks to Twitter user @AnakinDryTalker)
Let’s take a look!
Habit of enabling people to 'fail upwards' and hiring people into senior positions who do not have adequate (or any) relevant experience. - Numerous incidences of racism, transphobia, general discrimination. - Pay is not competitive for a salary of that size - Can be cliquey and in general have a bit of a 'school' vibe - Staff turnover is unbelievable, which can make it quite a depressing place to work - Morale is generally very low - Extremely low likelihood of promotion/raise regardless of experience or performance - General feelings of carnage most of the time.
Workplace gossip, secretive leadership, org was very focused on appearances and image.
Bullying and harassment are commonplace. Very cliquey. No procedures in place for supporting disabled staff – the reasonable adjustments policy has been “under review” for almost two years! Not tolerant of all faiths and ethnic backgrounds; discrimination on these grounds is widespread Cis staff routinely refuse to use the correct pronouns for their trans colleagues, despite Stonewall being an LGBT charity Staff turnover is through the roof.
CEO had developed a cult of personality in 2018 High staff turnover Poor senior leadership - unless dancing to CEO’s tune No prospect for promotion or pay rise Some people thought to be a good leader meant to be either a bully or a political snake
I remembered that Amnesty International, another organisation trying to force the expansion of men’s rights down our throats, had a reputation for a toxic office culture, and sure enough…
Sadly, people who want to get things done are stuck between, on the one hand, amateurish leaders with no vision, who tend to fall back on bullying behaviour and dont take responsibility for decisions or problems within their teams, and on the other, staff who have worked there a long time and get viciously aggressive to anyone they feel is on their turf or challenges them. It makes it a miserable place to work. It is tragic because so many people want to work there, but I really could not recommend it to anyone. Most of the good staff either leave or burn out very quickly. While there need to be big changes at leadership level, including the board, it is the way staff treat EACH OTHER that is the biggest problem, and that seems deeply built into the culture. One wonders if that can ever change. Its a particularly hard place to work if you belong to a minority.
Bad management and toxic environment from management. There is no accountability for them.
Toxic culture, terrible leadership, entitled staff. This organisation will need to implode further before it can build up again.
Bureaucracy, hierarchy, aggressive and unpleasant management.
high salaries of some - eg £200k + for SG - mean people might be attracted for the wrong reasons. Organisation has been through huge changes in recent years - at a cost of millions of pounds and a loss of experienced staff who held significant institutional memory - for what gains. Organisation seems incapable of getting rid of staff who seriously under-perform while still drawing big salaries, when faced with possibility of negative publicity. Unclear what direction the organisation is headed - trying to cover too many areas. Too little accountability for how money is spent, bearing in mind money comes from the general public.
× NEW STARTERS BEWARE. What you are not told in training : × You will literally be thrown in at the deep end × If you don't get a sign up after 3 days you will be fired × If you show any signs of negativity (including being upset) you will be fired × No job security. You could literally have a job one day and not the next if you fail to meet targets × Long hours. Travel time can be a few hours OUTSIDE of work hours so you will literally be pulling 10 hour days. Everyday.
Advice to Management
Don't be so brutal and cutthroat with new starters. Give them a few weeks at least to get good at their job! Don't put so much emphasis on targets. Focus instead on developing your staff for the longer term.
A bureaucratic place to work which is highly political and very, VERY slow moving. Innovation and change take a very long time with lots of middle managers and red tape. - A lack of appreciation and value in great staff members mean a lot of people have come and gone, which, if treated better, needn't have been the case. Appreciation then seems to come as a reactive, when it is already too late than proactively and organically. - Work/life balance is next to none. Your work can hardly ever be completed within work hours and I hardly ever left feeling satisfied I'd achieved what I needed to in my day. - Dysfunctional teams and real bullying are left unchecked, especially by Senior Leadership Team. - Seems there's always a hidden agenda. Nothing is transparent or feels it can be taken at face value.
I have to say, I didn’t see any sign of this when my wife and I were travelling with Amnesty and Colm O’Gorman to help bring about abortion rights in Ireland, but then again, they kept the misogyny well-hidden too. After the eighth amendment was repealed, they instantly removed Irish women from their greatest victory.
If you work or have worked for any of these organisations and have a story to tell, let me know!
None of it is a surprise. I was thinking the other day whether anyone on the GC side has been able to find, or been contacted, by former employees of Stonewall or Mermaids? Surely by now there’d be whistleblowers, or at least people who left, or were fired, and are now able to think for themselves?
I worked for Oxfam for 10 years- and again the senior management were appalling in their arrogance and sheer uselessness - the Haiti scandal was their public shaming but the CEO at the time Dame Barbara Stocking oversaw the men able to leave and get other jobs - she's got some highly paid job at a woke Uni - the next one copped her mismanagement with his own mismanagement of safeguarding - as with the bloated Public Sector, the 'third' sector is very generous with the tax payers donations and paying themselves handsomely. All these mega charities need dismantling.
