Dr Jillian Spencer, a child and adolescent psychiatrist with 20 years’ experience faces losing her job at theQueensland’s Children’s Hospital (QCH) for raising concerns about the harms of gender medicine. Dr. Spencer said she felt like she was “on a plane with hijackers” who want to silence dissent.

“I couldn’t believe the hospital would stand me down when I hadn’t done anything wrong. I pinned my hopes on the UK’s Cass Review ⁽¹⁾ solving everything, but when it landed in 2024 and Australia ignored it - when the ABC claimed it wasn’t relevant - I was gutted”.

Australia is like the Japanese soldiers who, after World War II remained lost, isolated and fighting in the jungles until 1974. Australian gender clinics have consistently ignored the mounting evidence of harms highlighted by the systematic reviews of gender medicine from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Wes Streeting, the UK Labour Health Secretary said: "The Cass Review found there is not enough evidence about the long-term impact of puberty blockers for gender incongruence to know whether they are safe or not, nor which children might benefit from them. The evidence should have been established before they were ever prescribed”.

The decision to terminate Dr. Spencer seeks to silence her before the publication of an independent review into puberty blockers commissioned by the Queensland Department of Health due by 30 November. The Australian Medical Professionals Society (AMPS) described this as a “miscarriage of justice.”

Over 100 medical professionals called for an independent inquiry into gender medicine while concerned parents, detransitioners and many independent groups support Dr. Spencer and have called for her reinstatement.

But this is bigger than one person - Queensland hospital is sending a message to every medical professional – speak out and we will destroy your good name, reputation and livelihood.

This cannot stand.

Additional context on why Dr. Spencer is being silenced

Dr Michelle Telfer is the leading architect and author of the Australian Standards of Care (SOC) for gender medicine that the UK’s Cass Review scored only 18 out of 100 because of its lack of rigour. Queensland hospital follows these standards and is therefore implicated in poor practice.

The Cass Review was damning and yet Queensland Hospital, the Melbourne Royal Children’s hospital, the ABC and leading politicians chose to ignore the Cass Review findings as not being ‘relevant’ to Australia.

In the April 2025 Family Court judgment (re: Delvin) Justice Andrew Strum criticised Dr. Telfer as a poor witness, stating her role as an "advocate for trans rights" overrode her duty to provide objective expert evidence. Strum said Telfer offered "misleading" testimony - adopted an ‘overly binary’ and ‘unquestioning approach’ to affirming gender and compared the UK's Cass Review to "Nazi-like oppression.”

Dr Telfer and other gender doctors are activists with an ideological commitment to the belief in the ‘trans child’ for which there is no biological, medical or scientific evidence.

The institutional response to the mounting evidence of harm from gender medicine in Australia can be characterised as DARVO - deny, attack and reverse the victim and the offender. QCH denies the evidence from across the globe; attack Dr Spencer for speaking out and portray her efforts to protect children as an effort to victimise them.

We must break the spell.
