What a great analogy and a great piece. Thanks Graham, that cheered me up no end. I really hope that’s a sign of things really changing. We’ve had so many ‘this will do it’ moments but if people have woken up, that’s a huge step. And for them to sit in silence during a show, that speaks volumes.

I think it was Max Wall who said when asked upon leaving the stage, 'how his performance went' - "I died like a louse in a Russian's beard."

This seems apt for the segment of Herring's show noted above in which he seemed to carry on regardless of stony silence and ostensible audience unease - and with such 'herring-do', as it were - and then taking proper aim and shooting himself - satisfyingly for us - in both feet.

I've seen Herring at least twice live in the distant past, and as far as I can recall, he only had one genuinely funny section. That was when he recited all of the 'begats' in the Bible.

And even then, if you analyse that admittedly very amusingly intense peroration - he didn't even write it - he just recited it.
