When listening to Nicola Sturgeon saying that the male rapist would be transferred to a male prison, she was careful to say words to the effect that backtracking on placing him in a women’s prison was only particular to his case. She’s been careful to just single this out as an individual event, rather than part of a system, so that she doesn’t have to review her entire atrocious destruction of women’s rights.
What a difference a functioning media makes. Not that ours is functioning: it simply had no choice but to report that Bryson was being sent to a women's prison because it came straight after the Section 35 Order. It's a clear demonstration of what happens when people are told what's going on. The practise of sending dangerous men into women's prisons presumes that people don't care about women in prison However, the events of the last week show that people do care - they just need a media that's not too cowardly to tell them about it.
That apart, now that 'Trans women are women until they become political liabilities,' I'm looking forward to seeing how the Scottish Government try to deal with reality-based debate after years of being able to shut down concerns by shouting about bigotry. At this stage, there's no way they can admit the extent to which they got it disastrously wrong, so all they can do is keep digging.
